Would I benefit from just going with forged pistons & not rods in a GSR?
I've got a JRSC'd GSR and I'm planning on putting on a LHT intercooler and upping the boost (10-12 lbs intercooled). I've read plenty of threads of stock components holding quite a bit of power. I was considering spraying a bit of nitrous through the blower (maybe 50-75 shot) for a little extra.
I KNOW that stock cast GSR pistons won't do too well under this much stress (JRSC AND spray). I might be able to squeeze out enough cash to invest in a set of forged pistons for this setup...it's somewhat of a stretch, but I might be able to bite the bullet and do it before I increase the boost. I just don't think I'd be able to do rods, too for some time.
So, how much power can the stock GSR rods handle? I wouldn't even THINK of doing this on LS rods.
Any suggestions, guys?

stock rods are a press fit. you have to press the wrist pin out and then re heat the small end to receive the new wrist pin.
with that being said, you can do that however, with the boost and the spray, since you are goin in that far, put rods in it also.

i have seen a couple sets of forged pistons that press onto stock rods for sale but while you have it apart why not throw rods in too? count yourself lucky cuz you dont have to notch b series blocks for aftermarket rods like d series
Sounds like you have a decent amount of money in your car, why not just spend $300 or less and buy rods...Its only going to help you in the end..
Oddly enough, I was thinking this just today. I saw a thread in the classifieds with used Ross press-fit 9:1 pistons for $175. So for 1/3 the cost of pistons/rods, you could use those. Since its usually the pistons that go in a stock b-series before the rods, it wouldn't be a bad deal.
However given the price of the JRSC, LHT, and a n2o setup, $300 for eagle rods isn't exactly going to blow the budget completely. Just think of what could happen - a snapped rod will usually take out the entire shortblock, and at minimum require new valves (if not ruin the head).

^ I agree, the rods will be your weak link and will jeopardize the entire motor. As everyone says, its not that much extra for rods anyways.

just as everyone is sayin.....no point in gettin pistons and not rods....if u need to wait to get more money it will be well worth it....it makes more sense to get both if ur gonna end up doin the same work to change just the pistons anyways.....
Id suggest not doing it since if a rod goes...its gonna suck for the rest of your engine..but if you decide to go through with it be sure to get carange pics.
Rods are what $300? I dont understand why people dump money in their cars and want to cheap out on important ****..

Point taken, guys. Eagle Rods, here I come!
Now, if I can just decide whether or not I want to use my GSR or LS crank.

Check the marketplace on here for someone that needs money and is selling eagle rods for cheap, and then use whichever crank they belong to
I'm kinda leaning toward the LS Rods.
I had an ls turbo motor and broke the ringlands on the pistons, and in pinch I bought a gsr shortblock with srp forged pistons, shotpeened rods, and arp rod bolts, for cheap. The motor used to be supercharged, and he had no problems at all with it. We'll see if it holds up to a turbo now.
