Ive done the CKP sensor // knock sensor trick.
completely stock from head to block and tranny.

will i pass smogg?

and better yet, i wanna bar'd it cause cops down here are insane with any swaps. can i also get it bar'd atleast?

and yes, i know.... if you want to bar'd your vehicle, you have to have the motor within as the same year or newer.

and another thing, if your tranny is manual, and you are running an automatic ECU, will that pass smog or can you bar'd it also? i know it throws a code 19 (automatic transmission lock).

The guys will know a D16Z6 is OBD1 and it likely won't work out, even with OBD2 working and all. In other states it -might- get by. Definitely fix the A/T code with a different ECU though, the CEL will probably be the death of the smog check.
I really do not know what to do in your situation.

Well, if you know you have to have the same year engine or newer as your chassis and your putting in an older swap then you already answered your own question? It won't pass the visual inspection at the REF (you may be able to get it to pass smog) cause they will look at the badge and see that it's not a y7 or whatever is supposed to come stock in that 96 civic. and yeah with a CEL you won't pass smog or a ref/BAR test/inspection until it's fixed.
