Hondata VS AEM - why pay more if you aren't going to use it?
Hey everyone, I will make this short and to the point.
I have a 97 GS turbo that is in the process of getting a manual swap. I am thinking about getting a standalone but I don't know what is the best for my setup.
Facts:
97 GS
RevHard Stage two turbo boosting 9 lbs
Tranny swap to manual with gs manual ECU
Desires:
Boost 9lbs reliably
a standalone that is simple to use
I am not planning on making this a 11 sec street car. I just want to have something that can handle what I have now. 10 lb MAX. What is the best buy? I was thinking Hondata (don't know which stage) but the garage guy said that the AEM would be better for what I have.
I need your help people!
Thanks,
Dave

well, if you go with a hondata probably a stage 2b but you will also need a p72 obd1 and a harness convertor to obd1...which this about adds up to the AEM EMS which is plug and play.
Contact b18bturbo (Viren) for the best prices on the AEM EMS and great customer service.
Or contact Rocket (Robert) for the best prices on hondata.

Exactly my point..... also if you have tuner around you they should know how to mess with this system, where as I don't know ANY hondata tuners remotly close by here and I live in north jersey for christ's sakes..... Not knocking down hondata, just stating if your obd2 then its just a bitch and expensive and you can't even tune it yourself etc...
talk to Philo, he has experience with both. He told me when I asked him the same question that if I am just going to get it tuned and leave it alone, then go with Hondata. falconGSR has the EMS and apparently the EMS is a big pain in the *** unless you know what you are doing with it.
Couple questions:
1)What does obd1 and obd2 mean? Which do I have again
2) the EMS was quoted at 1400 but what other costs are there?
3) Once I set up the EMS, does it need adjusting in the future, even if there are no other mods put in?
Dave - who does not know anything about fuel management
THANKS A LOT GUYS!

3. The EMS once setup wont need adjusting again unless you run some bad high boost or something like that.
2. 1400 for the EMS damn thats high get it from me 1218.75 shipped.
1. You have obd II 30-1020 is the model you need.

EMS will by using there boost control solonoid. It can be setup to do gear based boosting bases on the solonoid.
I have the AVCr, so with the EMS, I can get ride of that? What about oil pressure, temps, boost gauges? Is the EMS capable of monitoring all of that?
I was not aware that you needed a laptop - is that what was on the F&F? Do you have to have the laptop on when you are driving? If so, I'm opting against it...

i think EMS is only gonna get better as the firmware and tuning software matures. firmware version 1.0 hasn't even been released yet, so the system is still in 'beta' as far as i am concerned. but all the absolute necessities are there to drive / race it even.
you dont need the laptop on. You wil still need you guages. you can datalog and retreive it. you will need laptop to load your base maps and make changes.
THE AVCR you can sell. and get the gM boost control solonoid

My plans, which change daily, is to run 15-17 psi with a t3/t4E 48a/r turbine 60trim. I'm looking to make somewhere around 300-350 whp. Would you recommend Hondata 2b w/datalogger or AEM-EMS?
aem ems if its obdII car setup its just cheaper but for obd 1 you can get the hondata which will work just as good.
what's up...you're the guy i'll go to for tuning on the Hondata...I know you get this all the time but given the turbo I listed with Hondata 2b, 550cc injectors, SFP manifold..Is my whp goal realistic? This would be on a built bottom end. Not sure which pistons(JE or Arias) comp around 9.0:1. crower rods..Possible headwork for piece of mind but nothing major..All this in an h23a1 honda prelude....1996 so it's obdII
any one got the cable that u need to hook up an accel dfi to laptop? ]

im gettn a killr deal on this thing so i gotta jump on it...the cars a 2.0lgsr w/ built bottom...other then that , its stock to say no more mods besides the nos dp .

has anyone seen any good results with aem??!?! ive seen two people i know blow motors with trying to tune with aem
i ve got good resutls with the aem as well as the hondata. both are good. DRT is making over 600 hp with there aem unit as well.

without proper equipment (wideband o2, EGT etc) its pretty easy to screw your **** up...but i cant believe some people actually let their engines run out of whack to the point of destruction.
and of course thats true of any setup aem. hondata, or even a fmu...
