best standalone for the $ ?
i need a standalone. as money alots me only around 1000 to 1200. i was leaning towards a power fc.which standalone will be the best around that price range? its a built/turbo car. thanks
I am trying to decide.
Aem has the wideband autotune feature...and doesn't require buying a P28 ecu, burner or anything like that.
Hondata does have a large user base, and there are alot of base maps you can use out there.
My main problem with hondata is that I see you can't buy stage 4 right now...and I want to learn how to do some tuning myself.....

Stay away from the PowerFC, go AEM or Hondata. I have always liked Hondata but since AEM released 0.89 I am liking it way better than before.
A buddy of mine has the PowerFC and the features are limited, the handheld programmer is really cool but you cant use a laptop. But the worst thing is only two shops in the US can reprogram it and Carboy wanted to jack my buddy $400 to enbale the 3bar map sensor.
If you want every feature under the sun and dont mind a little bit of learning get the AEM, if you want a simply factory type setup with limited options and a lower price go Hondata. Between the two they cover most options.
If you want an all out race ecu that uses an integrated wideband at a decent price take a look at speedpro.

Import you a Haltech e6k from Australia. Much cheaper there than in the USA. With shipping and duty trick you can get it for about 1000 USD or lower.

Yes YOU CAN use a laptop to interface with the Power FC!!! The do sell USB and serial port interfaces for it. But aside from programming the fuel and timing, I feel that the Commander is a lot more useful.
Its easy enough to use that you can master it in a few hours and dyno tune it on your own using the built in map trace feature. No need for expert tuners, but there are a few people on H-T who know it pretty well who can help. Also people who can give you good baseline maps!
Advantages over Hondata:
-overall its alot more cheaper for ODBII cars. completely plug and play.
-no need for burning roms everytime you need to make a change
-convenient commander ...no need to carry a laptop around that may be proned to getting damaged or jarred...or even crashing.
Advantages over AEM:
-no need for laptop
-much more cheaper

People make carrying a laptop a bad thing. Its not like you are gonna burn you ***** or anything.

it was the first "standalone" i ever researched, and now i dont even think its a true "standalone".

It is not a true standalone, although I have found it to be a viable alternative. I am happy with it, although I would be using Hondata or the EMS if it wasn't for my automatic tranny.

i have the power fc and love it!i bought it from xs engineering and i sent them a list of mods with the order.they programmed.the base maps and i spent 3 hours on the dyno and it is perfect.the car feels like it came with a turbo and will take whatever abuse i give it!the system is very simple and you don't hardly have to fool with it.i have had a haltech and had nothing but problems.this system simply plugged up and worked.the only issue i had when i first got it was that the injector pulse timing was set for blitz injectors and i have rc.a few minutes on the phone with koji(from xs) and it was perfect.the only comlaint i have is no datalogging.there is a guy from a company called datalogit that has come up with a laptop based program that allows full base map control as well as datalogging.he originally made it for the rx-7 and has just released a honda version.he said if you buy it,any bugs in the system would be upgraded for free.i am just not comfortable with the chances of any bugs yet.
i almost forgot.as far as the limited control goes, you do not get full base map control on the fuel map(i think to keep you from screwing up).when the initial base map is programmed however,it should be well within the ballpark.however,if your base map is that far off,you can vary the map voltages which in turn adjusts the base map.so you DO have as much control as you will ever need.
Depends on who's tuning it. Personally I'm for Hondata as Secret Services is located not to far from me and I know they have alot of experience with it and tune it for a good price.
