I have had this motor for quite some time, I assumed it was just a stock H22A4.. I got an email from a previous owner who said that the block was from ERL and had forged sleeves. So out of curiosity I pulled the head off today and here's what I found..






There is a little rust on the outside of the sleeves which leads me to think that they are iron, therefore not OEM alluminum ones.
The cylinder walls do not appear to have the FRM coating on them.

The question is there does not appear to be a block guard of any type.
Are there companies that make forged sleeves like this?

Its o-ringed thats for sure. Its hard to tell with those pictures whether its sleeved or not.

they dont seem to be stock, if you look on the second picture it looks like there is a step on the outer part of the sleeve!

 

 

that ridge about an inch down from the top does puzzle me. It might have been there for a placement of a block guard that might have been removed? Well the sleeves themselves look stock.

oh and it has copper o-rings that makes me think it was resleeved again but iuno...

 

If you people look, you can see the big, fat lines devided each sleeve from the next. Given that's all the way through, they are definately ductile iron that were pressed in after they left Honda. The 'ring' an inch down is from what appears to be copper spray particle remnants. One thing I do recommend is that you have the sleeves checked for flatness, since they do look slightly mis-aligned now.

To the OP's question: a few companies make aftermarket sleeves for Hondas, and several companies resleeve blocks. They are not forged, they are a stronger ductile iron than the stock FRM sleeve/aluminum jacket combo. Aftermarket sleeves can take a ton of boost & abuse as long as they aren't bored out too far.

 

I am about 99% sure those are sleeves. That line about an inch down clearly gives it away and on stock honda sleeves you can see the two different materials in the sleeves from the top which these don't show. Another thing to note is how those sleeves aren't aligned perfectly unlike stock slocks thats are. Who o-rings a stock sleeved motor anyways?

so yea, i am now convinced that they are sleeved but i wonder what kind. They are definitely bored up to 84mm

 

Atleast there is some debate so I don't feel like a complete tard.

I talked a previous owner and he said they are darton sleeves from like 1999. Anyone have any knowledge of older darton sleeves.
I measured the sleeves they are 87mm and have stock H22 pistons..

 

they are aftermarket. back in the day i had a set of RS Engineering sleeves that looked identical to those.

I almost thought it was my old motor.

 

Definately appears to be sleeved and oringd.

Why someone would stick oem pistons in it is odd though... you would think they would do aftermarket while they had it being machined and apart.

If it hasnt been said already those are old style Benson sleeves
