I'm trying to get a deeper more powerful vtec out of my d16y8 without swapping heads or buying aftermarket cams. Question is can I swap to a better d series cam or is it possible to swap to a different vtec solenoid to get a stronger vtec? What kind of options do I have for doing this?

 

how do you mean "stronger" vtec?

 

I can hardly tell that it hits vtec when it hits at 5500. It doesnt pull like my gsr did when it hit and i cant even hear the sound of the engine change (or cam change) or like my b16. it sucks, i cant tell that it's hitting vtec. I want a stronger pull and to be able to hear it when it hits.

 

Arent there more factors than RPM?

all my searches say 5500 and that SOHC you wont really hear or feel it.

Oh, so adding an intake will deepen the sound and let me hear it better? My gsr and civic si already had intakes on them when i bought them so I guess that will help then. So vtec cant be "upgraded" in any way to make it stronger then... it all works the same I'm guessing. vtec is the same whether its an si, gsr, or ex?

there was a guy that routed the intake from the engine bay to the passenger window just to hear vtec on his y8..that vid was funny hahaha, but u can really hear the vtec crossover

honestly if you tried you could get a decent hmt w/ name brand parts for &lt;$1000

Cool, thanks guys. I know the y8 isn't the greatest head to work with but it's a friend of mine's car and I didnt want to go changing things and [freak]ing it up without knowing the low down lol. I appreciate the insight and that routing the intake to hear it more is quite amusing.

 

On a single cam u won't feel the vtec like ur wanting.. The reason u felt the vtec come in on ur Gsr and B16 are because of the 2 cams in them..

 

You will hear it a lot more on a dohc because the vtec cam lobe on the intake of a dohc (b18, b16, etc.) is larger then the vtec lobe on the exhaust cam. This creates that howl you hear when you hit vtec in a dual cam and creates much more power. The sohc vtec lobe is only for the exhaust, and not at all for the intake. When you hit your vtec engagement at 5500 (or whatever it is) the v tec rocker arm is pressurized making the vtec exhaust lobe open the exuast valves a little more. It won't be as loud and won't make as much power as a dual cam for this reason. The exhaust will breathe better when vtec is engaged but it's not giong to create a whole lot of power. The best thing you could do is spend the money and go turbo or do what you said you didn't want to do: after market camshaft, a bigger throttle body with a ported intake mani, a cold air intake, a header and full exhaust, and get the thing chipped out. I've came across a very select few of single cam vtecs that you can actually hear the vtec. Hope some of this info actually helps a bit, if you have any more questions ask.

HA I had a d16y8 in my ex and kinda had the same problem. My Friend did a d15b swap that I could really feel the v-tech in. But I blew mine up.
