Another Vtec question.....
A few days ago I started a post about swapping a vtec head for a non vtec. Since I have a 98 EX coupe, I got alot of responses saying that I should already have sohc vtec. I checked the block # and it is a d16y8, which essentially should be a vtec right?? I've been arguing with a couple of my idiot freinds about it. They say that if I did have a vtec, I should be able to feel it kick in, which honestly, I don't. I'm just confused as to what I have in my car, and what RPM the vtec kicks in (if it is), and if I should feel it. Besides bolt on mods, I don't have much, but I'd like to start building it a bit......

VTEC isn't as noticable on SOHC engines because only the intake cam profile changes. On DOHC, both intake and exhaust cams have two sets of lobes.
Edit: Dammit, I thought I was first.

Actually you can feel the difference when vtec kicks in for sohc. I had a mini me head swap (D16Y8) before my B20vtec and I could a a great difference when vtec kicks in. I could feel it pull about 15% more. My only mod was an intake. On the other hand, my friend has a 95' EX with no mods and I can't even tell if vtec kicks or not. If you don't have an intake, get one. If you still can't feel it, check your vtec solenoid and oil level.

Maybe you just felt it kick in because you had the non VTEC motor at first...who knows.

No, trust me I actually pulled. I was using an ITR ecu though, who knows.

so you used a itr ecu on a sohc motor?
how would that work? the maping would be way different because of one cam.

Why? Just pop your hood and point to the VTEC Solenoid.

Re: Another Vtec question..... (white99gsr)
all d16y8 has vtec, hence the y8. i just recently purchased a stock 00 ex coupe and i cant feel or hear vtec. maybe thats because i had a b16 in my eg before the coupe . try putting on a i,e,h. you should hear a slight difference when vtec kicks in

i can feel my sohc's vtec...not much compared to a b-series but i do feel it..maybe its because all the honda's ive had were always non-vtec upto now...can't you hear a change in your engines pitch when you hit vtec????

Ground a 12v lamp off the wire going to the solenoid. It'll come on when your vtec kicks in. Apologize to your friends if they can't feel it kick in, but at least now they can see it kick in.

Yes you can. The OBDII plugs match up. The air/fuel mapping is different but it still works. My sohc was bogging and you can totally smell the gas fumes b/c the itr is giving the motor more fuel than it should.

Re: Another Vtec question..... (GapxGuy)
best way to check if the motor is vtec or not is to look for the vtec solenoid. if it has one, you have vtec. if it don't have one then you don't have vtec. you can hear the vtec crossover a lot better if you run open headers, but not so sure about an SOCH though.
