Default Question about Vtec

I know this will sound stupid but I need a little help. I have never owned or drivin a Honda with a Vtec motor. I have had Hondas for years but I am a turbo guy so I haven't had much interest in the Vtec motors. I am looking at buying a 96 Civic EX with a D16y8 motor. I drove the car and it runs fine but I don't hear or feel anything different when I rev past the Vtec point. I started at 2500 RPM and took it to 6500 RPM in the first 3 gears and I can't tell any difference. How can I tell if Vtec is working? Should this be very apparent?

SOHC vtec are not as loud as the DOHC vtec.
But then like everyone above have mention...you cant really hear VTEC engaging until you have (I/H/E) intake/header/exhaust bolted on

Since I used to have the D16y8, I will tell you from experience, that it feels completely different from a B-Series. VTEC in a SOHC motor just doesn't feel like it does in a DOHC. It will be very hard to tell if VTEC is functioning properly in the SOHC. When it has happened in my B-, it you can definitely feel like something is wrong if it isn't functioning, while in my D-, I never really noticed it.

i drive a 99 civic ex coupe (same engine...d16y8). you can't feel the change over. and you can barely hear it but if you listen very carefully, when u get past the changeover point, theres a quiet high pitch whine. im a honda n00b as well and I've never been in a dohc vtec so i dunno if thats just a normal noise all cars make at high RPM's but I'm assuming thats vtec

The B16 motor seems to be the most noticable from what I've heard. My friends SOHC vtec seems to scream. His car is very loud and his Transmission has long gears but in his you can tell when it's in vtec.

I've never been able to hear the crossover on a single cam that still had the stock camshaft.

it gets louder and start noticeable when I have a short ram upgrade and a POS DC header plus a 5Zigen exhaust.. but its still NOT even close to a DOHC VTEC..

i would say that the b18 is the most noticable. my friend has a gsr and that baby screams when it crosses over. he also has a 95 accord ex sohc vtec and it only has intake and that also screams pretty loud.

Ok. Why the hell is everyone talking about how loud Vtec is? It's ridiculous.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned type R yet, so here it is... Type R!!!!!!!=Best. Roaring Vtec!

My friend has a 96 ex with a y8 motor. All he has is an exhaust. I heard him take off the other night, and I could def. hear v-tec. It was no b-series, but it was still there.
