i have a 99 ex and when i bought it it had a turbo that was way to big for it and when every u got on it and it was boosting for a while it would blow out smoke after u let off the gas. So i thought the seals in the turbo where bad so i put a to4e turbo on it. when i took the inetercooler off oil came out the pipes and the intercooler. since i have had the new turbo on it dont smoke as bad but still does it when i boost for a while. Do u think i could be getting to much oil pressure to the turbo causen it to leak. Any thoughs and comments greatly appericated it is staring to drive me crazy

 

what color is the smoke?

 

it is a greyish white is smells like oil burning.

 

grayish white = Burning Coolant, Black =Running rich and Blue = burning oil

 

what are some things to make it be burning coolant? And what about the oil in the intercooler and pipeing? I was thinking when i boost for a while it was sucking the oil up into the intake manifold and burning it off causeing it to smoke like that.

 

99% of the time i've seen a car burning coolant it's a head gasket.

 

yes, most likely if your burning coolant, your head gasket is at fault. mine is leaking right now but not gonna bother with replacing cause im gonna do a swap soon.

 

on some vehicles its normal to see oil in the turbo piping such as any VW thats turbo'd. so if your not burning oil or seeing external leaks you should be ok

 

My friend's 240SX has slight white smoke coming out of his muffler after boosting a while but it's not coolant. It smells more like oil burning as well. There is NO way to mistake a coolant burning smell with a oil/gas burning smell. Even though my friend's is greyish white, it's not coolant. I know since I myself have blown 3 head gaskets on my stupid old D15B7 I used to have. Not a pretty picture

One thing also you may want to consider is the oil return line. I know it sounds stupid but the first time that i boosted my civic I dodnt pay attention and used too small of a oil return line that feed into the oil pan and was causng oil to come out the seal of the turbo. Basiclly ur putting more oil into the turbo than the oil return line can let flow into the pan. Just a thought.

 

thanks for the great info. It makes sense now i guess after a while of the coolant burnig off it causes the fluid level in my radiator to go down and it will start to run hot so i have to add some fluid! thank god i may know whats wrong with it now. How big of a pain is it to change the head gasket? Never had to do that one before.

 

Its not really that hard but if you haven't really worked on cars before it could be a big job. Sometimes the headgasket is not always at fault though. There's a chance you have a crack in our cylinder head. GL.
