I love my new to me 98 Civic. I am driving about 3k mile each month. I have a friend who swears by Amsoil.

What oil/additives are best for my Honda? How about the Manual Trans? Synthetic there as well?

if your stock,

Reg mobil 5w30 will be good. No need to do anything special for it. just change your oil in the proper time.

I your boosted I would advise

Royal purple-10w30
Amsoil
or redline.

AMSOIL is the undisputed leader in synthetics.
but like he said, if your stock then it not really gonna matter.

No do not put synthetic in your tranny. Use penzoil synchromesh, its a 5w30 base stock with a friction modifier and an extreme pressure additive. can find it at your local parts store

i would say do not use mobil 1, its middle east oil and is known to burn and more expensive, It was not rated well on bobistheoilguy.com Amsoil,penzoil, or even valvoline are rated better

save your money and use conventional oil.

No personal experience but I wouldn't use royal purple on a FI motor just because of all the bad stories I've heard.

not just any castrol syntec, only castrol syntec 0w-30.

If you're stock, run whatever deals you can find (everybody is doing that 5 qts oil + filter for ~$15 lately) on 5w30 or 10w30. Use a good filter. Change it at the recommended intervals.

Most importantly - keep your money in your pocket!

Synthetics are great, but if you're stock and plan to change it regularly, there is absolutely NO reason why a conventional oil won't work just great for you.

amsoil 5w30 full synthetic. at 5000 miles, my oil is still honey colored.
plus - burn no oil at all vrs a quarter quart a month with pensoil
-longer change intervals (amsoil will test your oil if you do not trust this)
- better fuel milage, went from on average 32 mpg hw to 38 mpg hw.

i also match with a Pureone oilfilter.

Well they say this because using synthetics will expose oil leaks that may be plugged up/held together by carbon. Synthetics will clean out this carbon and cause your car to leak. That's whats been said but I have no idea if it is true. I've been using Mobil 1 since I got the engine (36,000) miles and I've been happy since.

Whether that oil leak thing is a myth, who knows.

thats one of the biggest myths out there and has been disproven time and time again. the only negitive effect it will have on a older motor, is due to the lower viscosity levels, it will find leaks in the seals that you never knew you had. but i ran synthetic on my 84 ford 351 w with no harm done in 5 years.

synthetic is actually better for your motor, due to having better cleaners, and dont break down as quickly, have a stronger film, and the list just goes on and on and on. for those saying that conventional oil is good enough, thats like saying a paper airfilter is good enough too. yes it gets the job done, but a properly oiled cotton
gauze filter works so much better.

all else aside, just look at my fuel milage increase just by switching oils i posted above. at close to 5 dollars a gallon, 6 mpg more is a huge increase, and offsets the price spent on the synthetic oil with a longer change intervold by a long shot.

Acutally the biggest myth is the flywheel one or maybe the drilled slotter rotor myth, lol.

Amsoil is definately the best, but expensive and a hassle to buy. I use Amsoil 5w30 (series 3000) in my cx, it gets slightly better gas milage than conventional oil and it only needs changed every 30,000 miles which makes it cheaper in the long run. Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 is very close to Amsoil in the 4 ball wear test, but you'd have to change it at around 10,000 miles to match Amsoil in wear protection. Amsoil cleans the engine very very well, and when I used their 0w30 (series 2000) the CX used a little oil, it doesn't use any with 5w30.

go to bobistheoilguy.com. start a thread on that message board stating amsoil is absolutely the best oil and mention the 4-ball wear test as your reasoning. read all the responses that you recieve and tell me if you think the same. the four ball wear test doesnt tell you much as far as how good an oil is, but it might for a type of grease in ball joints. there are many tests that oils have to live up to and you cant say one oil is the best in some test that really doesnt pertain to engine wear.
