Default turbo leaking oil from chra and into turbine.. blown ring?

what's up guys? so I got my car running a few days ago.. the turbo was purchased used, and spotless.. it had no signs of oil and very little shaft play. the first day it wasn't burning oil at all, but by the next day I noticed some oil on the bottom of the turbo and it's smoking in boost now.

the oil drain is good (-12 AN line), and i'm using an oil restrictor on my -4 AN feed line..

the oil pan fitting is up high on the oil pan.. i've taken the oil cap off and let the crank case vent that was to test for too much pressure..

so i'm pretty much at the point where I think the turbo needs a rebuild. I'm thinking about taking it apart and checking the internals for problems but i've never rebuilt a turbo before so I'd hate to start something I couldn't finish. what do you guys think? should I wait until I get a rebuild kit and just replace everything or should I open up the CHRA and look for coked oil blocking the drain??

i'm running 5w-30, could that be the problem???

any input is greatly appreciated!

I have the EXACT same problem (well, slightly different story -- i've had the turbo since it was new). Sorry I don't have any help for you... we're in this together

I just showed this to my friend who owns a honda shop (they have a handful of turbo hondas in there shop at any point in time).

He said this is very common and not to worry about it... it's not a blown turbo, just a common oil leak. He said an oil line restrictor should fix this as well as help the life of the turbo.

How big or should I say how small is your oil restrictor?

Make sure it isnt a water cooled turbo as well. If it is and you are not running water through the turbo you will damage the seals from heat and cause it to burn oil.
