I think most people break it in without boost. I believe you dont have to take the whole kit off, you can just take the spring out of the wastegate and it will let all the boost into the atmosphere. If I am way off base, someone please correct me.

it wont let boost in the atmosphere it will vent all the exhaust gases into the atmosphere. It will sound like complete ***.

y can't you just disconnect one of the charge pipes so there's a leak and no matter how hard u are on the throttle you wont get more the 1 lb. That way the exhaust gas still goes through the exhaust and doesn't smell like ****.

And to answer your motor break in question:
I have this thread saved in my notepad--just because I too will soon need to break-in a new motor.

this isn't a race motor though, it will be daily driven (somewhat). the question is should I swap the full motor in, drive 1,000-1,500 miles and then slap on the turbo kit and tune? or have the turbo put before I swap the motor in there, and just boost Really low levels of boost drive 1k miles then tune it.

Sorry about that. I realized that was for a race motor after I posted.
If you search you might find some threads on it.. I thought I saved more topics on it, but I guess i didnt.
I would say that you could keep the turbo on, just no large amounts of boost for the first thousand miles.
Make sure that when breaking in that you dont keep a consistent engine speed (stay away from long highway cruises).
I remember someone stating that you should increase engine top speed every couple hunderd miles. Another words, dont take over 3k rpm for the first 300 miles. Then dont go over 3.5k rpm for the firt 400. Then 4.5k under 600. And so on.
I would introduce very small amounts boost to the motor around 750 miles. Just to let the rings seat under boost pressure while they are still being broken in under vacuum pressure conditions.

break it in with boost. the rings are almost fully seated within 20 minutes or so of load on the engine.

I break my motors in slow for the first few minutes. usually 20-30 mins into a breakin, i'm flooring it in 2 and 3'rd gears bringing it to redline, and letting the engine/car bring the revvs back down. Decelleration is important.
