i have a 1997 civic stock ex and im trying to find out if its vtec or not. it doenst say it on the valve cover but ive been told all ex's are vtec and i need to know where to find the d16y8 or d16y7 on my engine. where would this letter be located on the engine? thanks.

Look at the engine from the front, to the left of the header (exhaust manifold), and down a bit, right next to the seam where the transmission meets the motor, there's a plate that has the motor stamp on it, looks something like this:



It'll simply have D16Y8 instead of B18C1.

Also, as I stated in the last post you made, there's a VTEC solenoid at the end of the head, next to the distributor, brownish-green cylinder looking thing, can't miss it, pictures in your other thread.

If your engine ISN'T a D16Y8, and you're SURE your car is an EX, then somebody swapped the motor out. There wasn't anything offered in the EX besides a 1.6L VTEC from '92-'00. From '96-'00 all that was offered was the D16Y8.

 

it is vtec and the emblem will be on the block. look at the valve cover left side towards the front of the car and look down. there will be a 1 inch square flat surface with the letters and numbers on it. if you can not see it it is because of dirt or oil or grease or any combo of those. wipe it off and voila.

you have a d16y8 if it is stock.

 

give it up buddy. if its an ex its vtec

Actually on a SOHC isn't vtec sol. located behind the head above the intake manifold. It has been a few years since I have fooled with a sohc but i have sold a few.

I like having to worry if the sol. is to the left or right of the dizzy cuz if you compare the B and the H that is a surefire way to tell the difference from a distance.

 

also you could look if it has a vtec solenoid near the distributor.

 

OP, I've decided to just post all the engines that came stock in the 1996 to 2000 Honda Civics sold in the US.

Your valve cover won't say VTEC on it if it's a stock engine from a US Civic EX.

By the way, there should also be a VIN plate on your engine and transmission which identifies the exact vehicle those parts came from. I'm not 100% sure if '96-'97 had the plates on everything though.
