Look at the engine from the front, to the left of the header (exhaust manifold), and down a bit, right next to the seam where the transmission meets the motor, there's a plate that has the motor stamp on it, looks something like this:
It'll simply have D16Y8 instead of B18C1.
Also, as I stated in the last post you made, there's a VTEC solenoid at the end of the head, next to the distributor, brownish-green cylinder looking thing, can't miss it, pictures in your other thread.
If your engine ISN'T a D16Y8, and you're SURE your car is an EX, then somebody swapped the motor out. There wasn't anything offered in the EX besides a 1.6L VTEC from '92-'00. From '96-'00 all that was offered was the D16Y8.

it is vtec and the emblem will be on the block. look at the valve cover left side towards the front of the car and look down. there will be a 1 inch square flat surface with the letters and numbers on it. if you can not see it it is because of dirt or oil or grease or any combo of those. wipe it off and voila.
you have a d16y8 if it is stock.

Actually on a SOHC isn't vtec sol. located behind the head above the intake manifold. It has been a few years since I have fooled with a sohc but i have sold a few.
I like having to worry if the sol. is to the left or right of the dizzy cuz if you compare the B and the H that is a surefire way to tell the difference from a distance.

H-T White Ops
OP, I've decided to just post all the engines that came stock in the 1996 to 2000 Honda Civics sold in the US.
Your valve cover won't say VTEC on it if it's a stock engine from a US Civic EX.
By the way, there should also be a VIN plate on your engine and transmission which identifies the exact vehicle those parts came from. I'm not 100% sure if '96-'97 had the plates on everything though.
D16Y7
1.6L SOHC non-VTEC
1996-2000 CX (hatch)
1996-2000 DX (coupe, hatch and sedan)
1999-2000 DX-V aka SE aka VP (sedan)
1996-2000 LX (sedan)
106 hp @ 6200 rpm
103 lb-ft @ 4600 rpm
D16B5
1.6L SOHC VTEC CNG
VERY RARE; NATURAL GAS VEHICLES ONLY
1998-2000 GX (sedan)
(horsepower I hear is similar to a D16Y8)
D16Y5
1.6L SOHC VTEC-E
1996-2000 HX (coupe)
115 hp @ 6200 rpm
104 lb-ft @ 5400 rpm
D16Y8
1.6L SOHC VTEC
1996-2000 EX (coupe and sedan)
127 hp @ 6600 rpm
107 lb-ft @ 5500 rpm
B16A2
1.6L DOHC VTEC
1999-2000 Si (coupe)
160 hp @ 7600 rpm
111 lb-ft @ 7000 rpm
And here's one more photo to help out. Here is the VTEC solenoid that mentioned in several of the other posts above. This particular photo is a VTEC solenoid on a D16Y8 from an EX.
