axle boots on a 92 ex 5spd. Are the boots sealed or open? On both of mine the boot is open.

When looking at my boots that cover the axle well just before it connects to your hub. the boot is not connected about 3-4 inches away. I actually found a black trash bag stuck in the boot closest to the tranny.

lol, that sounds really bad! Why dont you take a picture for us, and we can further examine your situation!

lol just letting you know ahead of time that those things are a bitch to replace. IMO its easier just to go out and buy used axles and just replace them. If you dont really have the money and lots of patients then just go to shuck and buy new CV boots.

 

as far as i know, all boots are sealed, if they're not, what the fudge were they put there for in the first place?

Don't buy used axles, you can get rebuilt ones for $60 a piece from Advance Auto. I had to order boots for my 94 LX 5sp, and one axle was toast. It turns out that they had axles, both normal and ABS, in stock.
I figured out an easier way to swap axles. Instead of forcing the lower control arm down and out of the way to remove the axle, just slice the boot and remove it in two pieces. When you put the new one in, if you could somehow clip the metal band on the larger side, you could reassemble it with it on the car. Otherwise, new boots are like $10 a piece. If you don't feel like doing that, I'm not sure the "right" way of getting all the stuff back together. I used a crowbar.

Oh, make sure the axle is seated in the transmission. It may feel like it went in, but give it a good tug to be sure. And don't waste your time with Honda MTL, get GM/Pennzoil Syncromesh/Syncroglide. There are a bunch of different names they sell it under, but it works good and it's like $8 a quart. I'm not sure the difference between it and motor oil, but it smells like rotting dinosour.

 

well the boots are sealed with metal clamps on both sides. thats what I mean when I say its a bitch to get on. I couldn't get the metal clamp back on and there was grease everywhere. Also take off your LCAs should only take about 3 seconds. After that your axels pop right out. Just made sure you have a decent air gun or breaker bar. The axles will pop right out. When you put your axles back in make sure you match up the splines and give it a good tap with the bottom of the hammer to make sure it seats all the way in so that tranny fluid doesn't leak out.

 

OK, Sorry I messed up. I pulled the trash bag from the passenger side closest to the "Wheel" not the tranny. I would be impressed if the thing got caught up in there. I think it was put there. But anyway here is a picture of both boots.

Get rebuilt axles.

 

Well whats a different step up from the autozn axles? could i go better? Money is not a issue .Also since Im going to pull them is there anything else i should do while im in there? What are some good places to buy quality parts?

 

Honestly, autozone axles are fine. If you're making massive HP then I would suggest Gator Axles.

You can get a good warranty at autozone/advanced auto parts too, otherwise you could go to a dealership and pay alot more for OE axles. But hundreds of people run autozone axles just fine.

 

I second that. Just get rebuilt axles don't bother trying to replace the boot.
