white smoke usually means coolant fluid is getting through from the head gasket.
sorry to break it to ya...

yes, in order to replace the gasket, you must remove the entire head, scrape off the old gasket and install the new gasket.

there will be differing opinions as to whether or not you can do it. some will say it's easy and others will tell you to take it to a shop. one thing i'll say is that it will not be cheap to take it to a shop.

good luck!

if you have all the tools to do a swap (motor and/or suspension), why wouldn't you have the tools to remove your head??

one thing that i've heard (i've never cracked open a head myself) is that you must make sure that you line everything up properly, and make sure that the new gasket isn't upside down.

basically, if you have a helm's, it sounds like you should be able to do this yourself...

Make sure you drive the car as little as possible in the meantime. The leaking fluid can cause your engine to run VERY hot and could possibly warp the head. I'm pretty sure you don't want to spring for a new head while you're at it. Make sure you keep the coolant filled to help the engine temps.
