Default CEL question?

I've been trying to get my car running, but no luck. I'm trying to check for codes the way it's described in the forum, by using a piece of wire and plugging it into the plug by the ECU. The only thing that happens is that the CEL stays on and doesn't go off. Is it because I'm doing it incorrect, or is that a code. I was thinking since it stayed on it was just one, am I wrong? :crook

That means there are not any stored trouble codes.

No, it just means the ecu doesn't have any trouble codes stored.
