Default Jumpy Rev counter

i have a 96 itr and when ever the car reaches around 4000rpm or more the needle just starts jumping around and if i hit vtec it jumps to past 10,000 and stays there now it doesnt do this all the time but most of it and when i does do it the car feels like its holding back as if it thinks its hitting the rev limiter any ideas what this could be

I had a similar problem with the speed sensor. When I replaced the sensor the speedo did the same thing especially at vtec. It turned out to be a fuse. It might be worth checking?

def. something with the distributer, maybe something as simple as bad plug wires that are arcing? it was happening on my 88 teg (winter beater) ever so often and i put some new plug wires on and it fixed it. GL
