Default Help! Timing Camshafts?

Hey just getting done replacing timing belt and all is well, but i have a question with timing the camshafts?

Should I have to hold them in place with a wrench or w.e, to get the the marks on the cam gears to line up correctly to to be at tdc? Or is what they go to naturally as long as the UP arrows are Up correct?

The 1 piston is at TDC, I'm just trying to make sure i have the camshafts at TDC. Seems kinda strange to have to hold the cams against the tension of the springs to have them at tdc.

Thanks!

yes, there is tension, with #1 at tdc. When #1 is at TDC, one or more of the other cylinders has a valve open a little

Oh one more question!

In the manual i have it says to use a 5mm pin punch to hold the cams in place...can these be bought at like autozone or whereever?

i think so, possibly home depot also. It can be done without the punch, but it is much, much easier with.

I've never had real great luck with the punch idea myself....I just line the crank up to TDC, then hold the cams in place w/ 2 end wrenches (lines pointing at each other). Oddly enough I've never had any issues with getting the timing right using that method.

Even with some punches or allen wrenches in there it seems like it doesn't hold them in just the right place. I always use a wrench to turn the cams (on the cam gear bolt) to where they need to be.

drill bits work too. if your cam timing was off before, and your valves were adjusted like that, i would loosen up all the valves while you install the timing belt then adjust them all when the timing belt is done.
