Default rust converter chemicals

just curious if these are actually worth anything. i see them at the auto parts store and in eastwood, and the way i understand it, you just wipe/spray it onto rusted areas, let it sit for a few hours so the reaction can occur, then paint right over the leftover film with primer.

anyone have specific brands or methods they like?

I'm currently restoring a '66 T-Bird. There were many rust issues with this restoration, and I found that POR-15 was a good product. The preparation was somewhat time-consuming though, as you had to prep the rust areas with a cleaner and a liquid that etches the metal. After that, the rust is ready to be painted. Think of it as a super primer that covers the rust and prevents further rusting. I also used some POR Patch and POR Putty on my wife's 92 Accord, where rust was forming above the rear wheels. The patch and putty helped to fill in the rust holes, and it stops the rust from spreading.

Another product I used was called Rustbullet. I liked that better as there was no prep you had to do. I used that on the floorboards and trunk area, where you weren't able to rinse off the metal etcher.

I've never used any Eastwood products myself, but have heard other people say good things about their products.

All these products come in various colors - just google the ones mentioned above for more info. Nice thing is that you can sand paint over these rustproofing products once they dry.

Good luck,

POR 15 is good stuff. you don't have to remove the rust, just scrape it with a wire brush and paint right over it. they sell a kit that covers 12 sqaure ft on their website for 20 bucks and it includes the marine clean and the liquid etch. they also have a catalog with a ton of cool stuff in it too.

yeah im not talking about those at all.
theyre more like primers and sealers.

im talking about clear liquids that you put on before doing all that. their job is only to convert the rust to some other compound

here this is similar:

I belive you are talking about products like OSPHO. as stated before, they convert rust so you can paint over them. they are pretty effective. also effective at removing rust stains on boats.

I primarily use it for rust removal on boats, but the directions say to spray on rust and let it sit overnight, then it should be ready for paint. youll notice it will turn rusted metal black.

Sorry to jack the thread but I would like to clear something since I'm not very good with English

I'm restoring my 91 DA9, some place a rusted and I can't remove it completely. Those place are still very solid. I've taken out about 70% of the rust in those areas. If I use rust converter on those area, will it rust again? Or the product will seal the rest of the rust??

Thanks for your help
