Default bass cutting out.

Ok its not a honda, BUT im sure you guys can still help me out.

In my 04 WRX i have a panasonic strade navi HU, Rockford amp running some 6.5" refernce components and a 12" alpine type X run by a 1600w MA audio amp (yes i know thats not rms..) and a 1.5 fared capacitor. this is run with 1/0 gauge from the battery to the cap 1/0 ground on the cap, and 2 gauge power to the amp, 2 gauge ground on the amp

Now the problem is, i can turn the volume up to a very loud amount, but at a certain point, (that changes depending on the song) the bass just cuts out, the rest of the stereo continues to play but no bass, as soon as i turn it down one notch the bass kicks back on at full strength. what could it be?

Could be the amp is going into protection?

I remember back in the day, playing "When Worlds Collide" (Powerman 5000), there was this one spot about a minute or so in, that if I didn't turn the volume down, the amp would shut down, and wouldn't turn on unless I turned the deck off then on.

The bassline in the song at that particular spot dipped down VERY low, and was more than the amp could handle, so it went into protect.

:shrugs: Maybe what's happening there?

Could also be overheating... Does the amp come back on it's own? Does the light go off on the amp?

It's an imidiate thing when it cuts out.

Think of it as a quick flick of my kill switch(on and off), thats how long it takes to come back on once it cuts out, assuming it turn the volume down a little.

What would cause it to go into protection? i believe the amp puts out about 1000w at 4ohm which is the RMS of my sub. (assuming my alternator car provide that much current which it cant)

Sub, Dual 4 ohm wired to a mono 2 ohm load on the amp, and the amp is stable down to two ohms.

I'll bet dollars to donuts that it's going into protect due to extreme current draw.

The problem is that the amp is trying to draw current to reproduce a strong bass transient, and when that current isn't available, it goes into protect.

Really simple fix is to turn it down.

If it becomes too much of a bother/problem, a charging system upgrade is in order.

oh ok, that makes sense, yes sometime this summer i might put a high output alternator in. If i did do that, how large of one should i get? The stock one is 75 amps i believe.

Also, not sure if this is true or not, but do the HO alternators cause any type of performace loss? just curious

A very general idea of what current draw you're dealing with, if your amp produces 1600 watts, and your battery is delivering 13 volts, that's a draw of 123.1 Amps.

Even at 1000 watts, it draws 76 Amps.

Amps = Watts divided by Volts

ok, well almost all the time, my starda says the volts are like 14.5 or something like that. maybe 14.1? waht ever it is is 14.1

soo the amp says 1600, but its prolly 1000 rms so 1000/14.7=68 so if i got somethinkg like a 100 amp, or a 120 amp i should be fine?

Because i also have a 100wx2@4ohm old school rockford amop running my components
