Default Couple more timing belt change questions....

Gearing up to do this Sunday on my 99 4-cyl. A few more questions.

I am changing all three front oil seals. Do they need any sealant applied or are they installed dry?

Does the water pump gasket need any sealant or is it installed dry?

Does the 99 have a balance shaft seal retainer already? The parts counter guy sold me one. The TSB I found only applies up to 97. The kit has a small round rubber gasket. Where does that go? Between the oil pump housing and the retainer bracket?

I decided not to replace the tensioner pulleys. I hope they are ok b/c the local dealer doesn't keep them in stock.

I'm doing this without a Helm too. Not advised, I know, but I didn't have time to order it. I do have the great write up on here and the Haynes (worthless). Wish me luck! My wife will never let me touch her car ever again if I screw this up....

You can coat the outside of the oil seal with a light coating of motor oil to ease install.

The water pump does not require any sealant. ONLY use sealant if the surface has deep scratches that require filling, otherwise the water pump gasket is all thats needed.

It depends if the previous owner did it or not. I dont recall if the 98-022 4cyl need the retainer but it doesn't hurt to be extra cautious. I dont recall where that little rubber o-ring goes, but there should be some instructions that came with it right?

I replace the tensioners as a precaution, but you shouldn't have to worry about it unless they are noticeably worn when you spin them freely. They should spin nice and smooth, otherwise, you should go ahead and order them.

The Helm (factory) manual is best, but my write-up should be enough for to get through this job without any problems.

Do not put any lubricant of any kind on the outer part of any seals ,, it might make the seal go in easier BUT also slide out easier, you should instead put some grease in the inner part of the seal
other that that i agree with touring

Thanks. This is a 1-owner and I never took it in for the retainer install. I don't rememebr being aware of the fix until now. Come to think, the kit does have a piece of paper in it, I'm sure that specifies the location of the o-ring.

I'm counting on your write up. I was mostly concerned about torque spec changes and wanted the Helm for that, but I'm just going to get what I can out of the Haynes and assume anything I don't find is the same...

The local Honda dealer wouldn't order the tensiors unless I bought them so I'll have to hope they are good. The car needs to be back in service by Tuesday....
