Crankshaft oil seal

Crankshaft oil seal
I own a '99 Civic EX and the crank seal has given up on me. I'm replacing a quart of oil at each fill up right now and need to get this fixed. Do I need to pull the engine to replace it or is there hopefully an easier way?
The Civic just rolled 160K and I need to replace the timing belt as well. So I'll be doing this at the same time.
Thanks for any input!

Re: Crankshaft oil seal
Nope, you can easily pull this seal out once you remove your harmonic balancer when you do your timing belt
It looks like a big gasket that sits around where your oil pump is attached to the crankshaft
Just don't lose that woodruff (sp) key!!
As for a temporary fix till you have decide to replace the belt/water pump/seal/all that fun stuff:
http://www.amazon.com/White-Shepherd.../dp/B002BG2OHI
Don't trust the shitty reviews by only three customers
Worked wonders on mine in like a week! 8D
OR you can overpay for this:
http://www.amazon.com/Lucas-10278-En...=pd_sbs_auto_7
Better reviews but ya gotta keep adding it every oil change
At least the White Shepherd stuff is a one-time thing
Good luck!

Re: Crankshaft oil seal
The seal is a peice of cake to replace, now getting to it is another story. It's a PITA to get to it.
Hop on ebay and look around for OEM t-belt kits. I got mine from DCHonda(or something like that) for $149 shipping, and it came with cam/oil seal, water pump, timing belt, and all 3 others.
This is your best bet.

Re: Crankshaft oil seal
Thanks for the quick replys. I'll be getting my hands dirty here soon and I'll let you know how it goes. As for the job at hand I feared it would be a pain to do it, but it'll be a good learning experience.
Do any of you by chance have a link to a step-by-step tutorial on what I'm about to do? Thanks!

Re: Crankshaft oil seal
So to recap...
Texas4door: I'll replace the timing belt and while that's off, remove the harmonic balancer and then I can access the crank seal? No need to lift the engine out right?
From 98civdx: Purchase an OEM tbelt kit and that will have everything I need for this job including the crank seal?
If that isn't right, let me know, thanks guys!

Here ya go, http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-GENUIN...item4aaed8d49d
This has everything except for the tensoner. The prices seems to have gone up $49, BUT, it's still cheaper then what you will get at the dealer, and better then any parts store ****.
You don't need to remove the engine, but you will need to jack up the engine, and support it to remove the driver side engine mount.
A jack will do for this, but use a block on the jack to help protect the oil pan.
