You are going to have to resurface the head and block and buy a new headgasket. You must resurface both or you will be wasting your time and mone if you just buy a new Hg and put it on. Trust me i blew my old stock motor the same way. But i didn't care because i was getting a swap anyways but thats my 2 cents.

sounds like the perfect opportunity for a swap. look on the bright side, now you wont feel guilty if you give the old motor the boot.

To answer your question you wont want to do this yourself. You must get the head and block resurfaced. Might as well have them install the new HG whle you are at it. ........Save yourself the headache all together and swap in a fresh d15b vtec motor from japan. about 400 for a fresh motor isnt bad when you are about to spend 200 for your HG and to have it resurfaced and labor.

^ also in for pics...

headgasket is not that hard.... i just did mine recently, and its not gonna be really 200$, all mine cost was the headgasket itself, i bought the hg for the y8, (its metal, no more of that paper sticky crap, and it gains power by taking out middle layer...)

its just one of those very time consuming things.... i didnt resurface my head or block, just used a sharpening stone to make sure it was all flat and no paper crap left.... everything is good so far....

good luck!

changing a head gasket isn't quite as easy as the rest of the cooling system. if you know someone who works on cars, get them to help you. it's not that bad with some experienced help. I'm sure you can find more info in the FAQ sections.

if that is a dx motor, I would't get all crazy with decking the head and block. just get one of those thick head gaskets. it will make up for the variations of a warped head, if it is even warped.

Just did one on 89 dx.

First get a service manual, it gives step by step instructions.

Search, there are several threads on this.

Some tips if you do it.

Mark your timing belt and cam gear with white marker or something, I put mine back on off a tooth.

There is a service bulletin release with new install procedures for the head bolts.

As for resurfacing the head, do it. I ran slightly hot and never overheated, and my head was warped. I didn't resurface the block.

^^ damn, beat me too it while i was typin all this crap up.. haha ^^

its deff makes it sound way easier over the computer, haha, but basically, in a nutshell, remove the upper rad hose and other misc hoses towords back of head, all your electrical connections on the head and intake mani, remove exhaust mani from head, remove valve cover, remove timing belt (be sure to put back exactly as taken off, {motor on time}) and remove the head, remove all of the old gasket crap, clean up the head if want... drain all coolant from block (flush it to make sure none of old gasket scraps went in there...)

tools: 10mm for valve cover and misc wire holders... 12mm (dont remember off top of head, but pretty sure its needed...) 14mm for the head stud bolts and to loosen the tensioner on the t-belt, pliars or somethin of the sort to help take off rad hoses, misc tools like phillips/flathead.....

thats pretty much all in a nutshell.... its been a few months since i did it on my car... haha, im sure im forgetin something.... its basically all common sense though, if it doesnt alow to take off the head, pull it off (some restrictions apply, haha) just be sure to put everything back like you took it off! (with a new head gasket, and whatever else you need...)

good luck! car looks clean btw...
