Default Welding to compressor housing?

My friend is running GT28RS's on his 300zx build with stock manifolds. The inlet part of the compressor faces right at the motor mounts making it impossible to get any type of intake/filter on. Is it possible to cut the 2 inch part of the inlet right down to the housing, and weld on a tight 90 degree aluminum bend in order to transition away from the mount? Or any other type of idea would help!

Thanks!

Sure, just make sure you take the housing off the turbo before you do it.

Just for the sake of discussion, would there be any risk of the housing warping after that and not bolting on square?

Will a silicon 90* bend not work? The silicon would allow for some slop.

Yeah Perhaps you could cut 1" or 1 1/2" off and still have a lip to intsall a 90*?

That was originally what we were going to do, but even with that its still to tight. The pic I posted has the most room, the other side is twice as tight. The new plan is to completely cap off the inlet, and take a hole saw and drill a 2.25 inch hole in the cap and weld a pipe on. It not going to be the best, but it seem to be the easiest fix to run these turbos. Why all this came about is because my friend was going to run something smaller, but got these, but no one has even ran 28RS's with stock manifolds, most get into a custom manifolds at that stage.

Can the motor mount be modified for more clearance?

On that pic the mount can be grinded enough to get a tight 90 in, but the other side the inlet is less an an inch away and about half is being blocked, so it would take an entire new mount to gain enough access. The other thought was to double up on head flanges to bring the entire manifold/turbo assembly out, but then the compressor housing touches the inner frame.

Here is the other side Im talking about

You can see how close the mount is, and then you got a hot manifold to deal with too..

For the first picture the problem can be solved by grinding away at the mount to get the clearance you need. In the 2nd one you would be better off making your own motor mount that would be wide enough and leave enough room for the turbo setup. Instead of building the turbo setup around the mount, it seems it would be easier to just make a mount that works around the setup in this situation.

I had a similar situation with a honda and a 4" inlet compressor housing, clearance with the radiator/fan to get anything on the inlet side of it. I don't have pics, but what we did was make a trim ring that was 4" od and 3" id. Then stuck a 3" tube inside the id deep enough to where it met up to the compressor housing where it was 3" (it's tapered from 4" to the inducer size). Then made a 4" sleeve that went from the od of the trim ring around the compressor housing and clamped on. Pretty much converted our 4" compressor housing to 3" and had a 45 coming straight out of the compressor inlet. If that makes any sense, lol, looks like the same type if deal would work for you.

Makes sense, thats what I suggested to him after I saw a local tuner who made that for a 35r on an s2000 motor to get clearence around the oil filter. Thanks for everyones advice, appreciated.
