Default S1 tranny

Is there anyway the identify the diffrence between the S1/J1 tranny versus the S1/YS1 tranny without opening them up? I already have the LS S1 tranny, but have the chance to pickup what is suppose to be a GSr S1 tranny. But what like to know what to look for without opening the thing up.

TIA

I read somewhere that the input shaft has one or two rings around it. This is for the D series trans, but maybe thatll help you.

To know for sure open the case and count the gear teeth. Its the only way. Honestly the S1 is not a GS-R trans its from Integra xs-i. The 92-93 GS-R were YS1. For many years Honda labeled the Integra's the same for vtec and non. S1 could be xsi or LS and YS1 could be LS or GS-R crack the case to make sure or install and find a RPM calculator based on you speed in specific gear.

thanks for that info. Thing is, I have a hydro R tranny but it pops out of 1st and 3rd. A freind made me a offer for one of my dseries tranny + cash, for his cable tranny. Which he's saying is a b16 tranny, but he says the tranny code is s1. And the cable b16 is a y1.. Also I already have a cable y1 LS tranny...

Hopefully when my R tranny gets cracked open, it's nothing major(shift fork I hope) and I can just use that.

Thanks again for the info

The integra xsi is a B16 and uses a S1 trans. I have 2 of them. B16 had S1, Y1 and J1.

you need to compare how many full turns of the input shaft it takes to make 1 full turn of the differential. i forget how many it takes for each tranny but if its a real b16 S1 than it will take more turning of the input shaft to make the differential turn once than the LS tranny will.

actually this site has the correct gear ratios for S1 http://www.autocrossing.com/cgi-bin/gearcalc.cgi. The all motor list is incorrect at least for the JDM S1 this I can attest to https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1681766

no, only y1 were available with lsd from the factory. It sucks because the oem s1/j1 diffs are weak as hell.

S1/J1 diffs are'nt weak, they are just as strong as any other diff. It is the shear pin for that holds the diff pin in place that is weak, after doing enough hole shots this shear pin will break and the diff pin will start walking its way out of the diff until it blows. All newer diffs are pretty much the same other than the fact that they use a stronger hardened steel shear pin.
