Mild steel to stainless yes, aluminum to stainless or mild no.

Yup. Steels to steels, yes, but pretty much anything else to steel, or anything Ti/Mg/Al/Brass nope. There has been some research on hi-energy fusion welding of Ti to Al, but its the sort of thing NASA has been researching. There's no hope of anything like that happening on a reasonable budget.

Basically, you are SOL if you want the fitting welded on. You could get them to weld on an NPT internal threaded bung, then thread your drain fitting into it, or get a steel/Al fitting welded on, and use that.

the new mazda mx5 has some parts where aluminum are welded to steel. I think you have to use friction welding for dissimilar metals.

I know you can use explosive welding to weld disimilar metals. They use it to make a metal called clad its used in alot of nuculear powerplants

thats not even brazing. brazing temps are over 800F.
thats some odd soldering alloy, and you wouldnt want to use it for anything structural at all.

ya, most likely the brass fitting has pipe threads on one end. Go to the hardware store with the fitting and buy a female thread fitting. you can cut it down and weld it right to a stel pan. Then the fitting would be removable or if you ever wanted to go with an AN fitting you could just replace the brass barb with it.
