Contains and lessens the heat emitted from turbo, manifold, header and sometimes downpipe. It can be done on an N/A car's header, but its best used on turbo applications, they make a large amount of heat discharge in and around the motor bay, helps keep a large amount of heat within the exhaust pipes.
Mongo say lots of heat bad for motor.

Heat wrap has two main benefits:
1) The hotter your exhaust, the thinner (read. less dense) it is, and the easier it flows. This allows your exhaust gasses to move out of your manifold faster.
2) Decreases heat soak to things around the manifold.
It also has some major downfalls, though.
1) It can trap moisture and lead to expansion/contracting in hot and cold (can crack it), and can cause rust.
2) It does dramatically increase the temperatures inside your manifold, and can compromise the integrity (can crack it).

Also, I've done some research on heat wrap for motorcycles in the past. A major problem is that it does what it does- namely, it traps heat in. This prevents the metal from dissipating heat properly and can weaken the metal and make it brittle.
