Default D16y8 or D16z6 Tranny?

I have a 99 Ex motor in my hatch right now. Seeing that my third gear grinds and is prob. going to go soon, i figured i would get a new tranny. What do you guys think is better as in performance? A Y8 or A Z6?
Thanks

differences are that y8 has steel forks and z6 has alum.

whichever you can find cheaper is your best bet.

I hear more success stories with the z6 than y8. Y8's tend to break easier, starting with that lovely 3rd gear grind that everyone loves. Id recomend Z6 over y8 if you can manage to do so.

finding a low mileage z6 tranny will be rare.

Why? All 92-00 hydro d-series trannies are interchangeable.

The gearing is way to similar to make z6 tranny's worth exponentially more.

Thser are more differences than just the gear ratios. For durability in hard use you should use the EX/Si transmission because of the 80mm x 40mm diff carrier bearings, and the roller bearing used for the second countershaft bearing. Also the clutch housing side countershaft bearing is much stronger in the EX/Si case, as well as the ISB being larger/stronger. Besides, as time goes on they will be harder to find in good condition.
