b16a2 in 98 hatch

Default b16a2 in 98 hatch

ok i know ive been postin a lot on random engines, i just cant choose, but ive decided that since im on a very low budget i only have 2000 saved im juss going to go with a b16a2 into my 98 hatch and later get a gsr block and start my poor mans type r. i dont have too much time to save more money because i only have 3 weeks of free time durring the summer and that will probly be the only chance to work on my car.

im open for any opinions on a b16 into a hatch good or bad, im pretty sure there will be a lot of bad
or if anyone has any other suggestions for 2000 to 3000 $ fill me in, just know im not trying to stay with the d series and i want some vtec

A b16 is not going to be much quicker than a d. If you look around you can find some deals. You can find a b18c1 for less than 3,500. If you can't get that much cash, what I would do is boost the d. I know you said you don't want to keep it, but if you play it smart and piece together a kit for 1,500-2,000 you will be much much happier. Hitting boost is a lot nicer than hitting vtec, and if you go this route you will have cash left over to spend on your suspension or cosmetics or whatever.

hes got a 98 hatch....D16Y7....i would love to think a B16 would a lot faster than that motor thats currently in there.....

I hate to hear that a b16 is the same as a d series. I swapped my I/H/E 93 dx hatch to a b16 and dropped 1.3 seconds of my quarter mile time. went from 15.8 to 14.3

The fact that both d16 and b16a have such low end torque, probably not a noticeable difference, but correct me if I'm wrong, but what makes the difference in the two motors other then mechanically, electronically and visually. Is the powerband in the mid and high end along with the rpm ranges, which the b16a dominates over the d16 any day.

turbo'ing an old tired d series motor which is the case with most of em by now

rebuilding a d then turbo'ing is gonna be alot more money & work

then a b16a2 swap

Well of course its more $$ and time, your doing twice the amount of work and time rebuilding a d-series then turbo and tuning it, compared to swapping a b-series vtec motor.

I never said it was THE same...Of course it will pull more than a d series...but people go into those swaps thinking it will be a huge difference. Spending 3k on a b16 swap and gaining about 30 hp wouldn't make me very content.

"old tired d series" - who said anything about it being old? And if you blow it. Go buy a d16y8 for 200 bucks off of someone who is swapping. You'll be back on the road in no time. No, I am not saying it is the best option...but it will give the OP a very noticable difference in power, and for his budget this sounds just right.

boosting your d can be a good idea, how many miles is there on it?? alacard has made some good points. The only reaosn i say not the B is because 1) many people complain with it's low end torque 2) your turbo d may be more fun than a stock B. Being on a budget and still trying to get what we want is a problem we all have

boosting is a good idea but your only going to get so much out of it... sure a b16 may have low end torque but why not swap the b series which gives you a foundation to work from.. you can save up later and turbo the b series on a budget.. as of where you can boost the d series and later your gonna want more power and wished you had a b series to work with.. just swap the b series... if you could only do one of them and then nothing else to your car forever then yeah go boosted d... but its not like you cant put a b series and then turbo it and loose that lack of torque and be hitting low 12's high 11's with a semi good turbo build and tune..

this is true, i guess this is where you make the owner has to make the choice
