Struts control geometry, shocks do not. And no, it doesn't matter if the shock has a spring perch on it, it's still a shock.

just to be clear, the difference between a "shock" and a "strut" is that a strut is designated ONLY for macpherson strut suspension. in this type of suspension the knuckle is integrated with the shock and part of the load bearing structure of the front suspension. it also eliminates the need for an upper control arm as we know it.
WE DONT HAVE MACPHERSON STRUT SUSPENSION. we have double wishbone. therefore, its NOT a strut. double wishbone is considered better because it controls the camber and overall geometry of the suspension better. however, it takes up more space and is more costly.
the thing is that MOST cars DO have macpherson strut in the front. so its very typical to call all shocks "struts". for example, if i walked into a parts store and asked for the "front left strut on my 90 crx", there is no question what im talking about, even tho its technically not a strut.
a shock (absorber) is all things that damp, perch or no perch.

heres a typical macpherson strut suspension. notice how there is no upper arm. your civic/crx does not look like this! very common in most cars, even bmw's. after 2001, civics and rsx's adopted this front suspension design as well.

this is a typical double wishbone suspension. your front suspension resembles this. notice the upper control arm.

furthermore, in the rear of many cars, in particular german like bmw and VW, you might see a "divorced" spring setup. the shock absorber is still a shock absorber. it most definately ISNT a "strut". they do this to increase passenger space. you see it in the fit and late model civics now.

however, that spring is no longer a "coilover" suspension, since it doesnt "coil over" the shock anymore. i bring this point up because ppl think "coilover" means some cheap ebay kit that you can adjust the height. no, it just means the spring is coiled around the shock, like in ALL 4 corners of your civic/crx. therefore, you have "coilover" suspension, stock. its just not height adjustable.
btw, we have rear trailing arm suspension. it "simulates" the double wishbone suspension for the rear. but it obviously isnt really double wishbone.
