Why won't my speedometer work. It's connnected at the tranny. Do I have to take the dash appart to fix it? It may be a funny question, but can a fuse be the problem? it's a 1990 honda accord.

is the tach working?

vehicle speed sensor is shot if that is the case

 

VSS is what it sounds like..mine did the same but I just forgot to plug it back up when I did my tranny swap...look at it and make sure its not unplugged or something..you never know..especially if you just did a tranny swap or something..if not then your vss is bad

 

also could just be that your odometer and speedometer is dead....

 

If the VSS is bad and the speedo doesn't work, would the odometer be affected?

My speedo quit when I re-installed my motor and the odometer isn't working either. Just didn't know if they are both controlled by the VSS.

 

If the Speedo doesn't work (whether VSS or gauge) the odometer will not work as well.

Cruise Control not working + a CEL will tell you the VSS is bad.

Most likely it's just the gauge itself I replaced the gauge and the VSS and i'm working fine now.

Damn dude. You hit the nail right on the head. My cruise also quit working and I'm getting a CEL. Thanks MuffinMan!

I picked up two VSS units for free yesterday; I'll put one in tonight.

 

I just put a VSS in and it didnt fix the problem on mine so Im guessing the cluster is shot.

 

when your vss goes bad, car will toss a CEL. since you have no CEL, I am gonna have to say problem lies with speedo or wiring to it from ecu.

 

Same thing here. I replaced the VSS twice yesterday and it still doesn't work.

 

our's quit working recently and then started working again soon after for no reason. i may have tapped on the sensor a few times though but i don't remember, it was very odd. my wife still thinks i fixed it and am telling a big fat lie about it magically starting to work.
