How do you know what sand paper grit to use for each job?

320, 200, 400......
For engine bays versus exterior. Or interior versus sanding down a wheel.
How do you choose the proper grit?
Is it based on type of material being sanded, texture or roughness of the object, types of coating on the object?
BTW > I've been using 320 in my engine bay.
I was also going to ask the proper technique to hand sand, but that's an entire thread of its own

Um no i think it meant if you got huge scratches in ur bay and chipped paint you ahould use like 180 to start. if you just wanna give it a good sand and your bay is in decient condition then 320. dont say i dont know.
Red scuff pad for bay. Same for interior.
Outside do 600.
This is if your scuffing and spraying. If you body fill somewhere sand that with 80 grit to get it shaped and go over that with 320 grit. Primer then wetsand primer with 600grit.

This just gives me all the more reason to make the sandpaper chart I was going to make last week.
Either way if you read my "How-to" I pretty much go through what sandpaper to use for each job.
