Ok so my car is a 1998 DX (D16Y7) would it be ok if i put an older (D16Y7) and still pass all smog stuff as long as its all stock and i never have to go to a ref?
I am in CA, or do they check the vin on the block also?

Engine MUST be from the same year or newer....They might not check since its a D series...
**EDIT** If you never have to go to a ref and the smog shop doesn't check the VIN then you are gravy.

Yah thats what i was thinking, just cover the vin on the block with grease ha and hope they just go "what ever its the same engine code as stock". but i dont know if most or all actually check the vin numbers on the block itself.
Technically it's illegal, but you can probably get away with it if you keep it stock. But if you have bolt ons when it's time to smog, that might make the smog tech poke around further.

For a motor that belongs in the car, its pretty much a crap shoot for a motor that doesnt belong in the car its a gurantee.

For each year of the car, the smog machine & stickers on your car will tell the techincian what smog devices to look for.
Even though its the same engine code, there may be a new smog device thtat the older engine did not have.
In that case you would have to update that smog equipement.
