what do they actually check for in smog checks?
what info do they check for? theres a VIN # on the engine block right? is that the only way they verify whether thats the right car being smogged or not? friend owns two 88-91 hatches. one has a swap and the other one doesnt. you see what im getting at...

not sure if you did a search, but im sure they've talked about it somewhere,, far as i know the vin number is in the database that gives you the year, make ,model and engine type it should have,, then they match it with what every engine you have in the car being checked... needs to match up..if it doesnt then they see if its a jdm engine, which are not in the database so they will know that part as well...if you have a swap they will run the engine code and it must fall either in the same year as your car, or newer, if not , you fail the visual test,,, if it is same or newer they check your ecu to see if it goes with that engine,, doesnt? you fail ,,,not sure if that answers your quesion,,,,, they can also check the firewall that will have your vin in large stamp,, to compare the vin tag on dash..
so if your going to have your friends swap go in they will check the vin# (tag, firewall), your engine code block, the ecu, along with other smog things on your car....
