Calling all "Frankenstiners" :o What is the average life expactancey of a B20 vtec
I have hear all kinds of stuff about the CRV b20 block + b16 head combo. Most of which indicate that the frakenstine is a tourque monster (reletively of course) and uber quick, but will not do this reliably beyond a one year 30,000mile time span. Is this true? Or are they just parroting what Johnny's cousin that works at Mobil said.
Any Frankenstiner up in here?

ummm...dont know yet...i think my swap only has around 8-10k AT MOST...i know ive put about 4-5 on it since ive owned it and its still going strong..i mean...besides some normal maintnence and i have a seal leak(cam seal) that imma deal with tomorrow...but i mean its still running
im kinda curious on this aspect too

The motor will be as good as the builder. You have a bad builder and bad maintenance schedule then youll probably see 10k if that. Have a good builder and good mantienance then you could see 100k. If its a stock setup then its as good as your mantienance.
i had mine since 2003...
no problem at all....its still kicking and screaming..
i drove my car...about 4 times...back and forth...from chicago to CALI...never had no problem...
i guess it all depends on who built it...

so true!!...also...the motor is as good as the two pieces...if you manage to put together 2 with high mileage i can imagine it wouldnt last nearly as long as someones who pieces it together with really low miles...

EXACTLY...It all depends on the builder...but then again the parts that you use and if you do stock sleeves or after market sleeves like Golden Eagle. There is a great post in the all motor section about building a reliable... lsv or b20v. You should check it out if you haven't done so already...

the main reason people blow their ls/b20 vtec setups is b/c they have an entirely stock bottom end that has a redline of like 7.2K? and the vtec head allows them to make power beyond the redline of the bottom end. after beating it for a while, rod bolts stretch/break and **** happens.
if you use a stock bottom end, know it's limits. if you build right you shouldn't any issues, within reason.

no offense, but what the hell do they do at a 3k service? comp/leak down test, valve lash? i can't think of anything that NEEDS to be checked every 3k..especially on a fresh engine. seems like an overkill, but i guess better safe than sorry.
