FAQ: Mugen CRX Pro Kit II Authentication Tips. Tell The Real Deal From Fakes
Since people have always been misinformed about this and unable to spot authentic Mugen Pro Kit II Ill make this post in here and create a thread explaining to all so that there is no more confusion about the subject and make it clear to all hopefully.
Here we go.
The authentic Mugen Pro Kit II, both the 88-89 and 90-91 designs were made out of fiberglass only. The differences between the two are minimal. Essentially one of the only major changes to the design was that the front bumper was modified to fit the bumper lights because the 90-91 CRX had wrap around style while the 88-89 had rectangle lights. The Wings West RS Kit and other similar kits to that use 90-91 USDM bumper lights in the front bumper and if you look closely are not even close to Mugen Pro Kit II at all.
Here is what that looks like.

The only other change to the front bumper is the size of the vents that go under the bumper lights. In the 88-89 version you can see that they are like half of the size of the 90-91 Style. It is clearly visible in this picture.

The only other differences is how it fits around the headlights and such. I dont need to explain that because you can clearly see it in the images posted above.
The rear bumpers are identical between the 88-89 syle and the 90-91 style. The only difference was that on the 90-91 style they offered optional reflectors that went on the side of the rear bumper and that was it. It was only offered directly from Mugen and doesnt appear in their catelogues since it was added at a later date after they were printed. There is a write up about this and other little known CRX FAQs, but I cant find it at the moment. Search for it and you will be able to see other examples of what Im posting below.
Below is a picture that should explain everything about the authentic Mugen Pro Kit II rear bumper. It shows the 88-89 bumper, the 90-91 bumper, the optional reflectors, the inside and mounting brackets of the bumper from Mugen and also shows Wings West RS or other fake equivalents. You will be able to see the difference obviously when they are put side to side like below. Just compare the bumpers and see.

The doorcaps are the easiest to tell if they are authentic or not. The Wings West RS kit and other fakes are not as long, dont have nice sharp edges and there is a gap between the fender and the door which is very promenant. Unlike on the Mugen Pro Kit II kit which there is only a miniscule gap.

If anyone would like further details regarding the wing or side skirts Ill be more than happy to oblige. I just hate seeing people passing something off for what it is not. It makes people like myself who have the authentic parts pissed off because we know what we have and are tired of people thinking its fake due to misinformation.

Great post. Very informative!
Aren't the rear bumper flares huge on the WW kit because, although inspired by the Mugen kit, it was designed around USDM bumpers (and therefore will clear the insides) in order to maintain some level of functionality?
What do these differences make or really matter anyway?
I don't think anybody with a WW kit ever claimed it to be a real Mugen kit, and was almost always the only option for most US enthusiasts. I don't think they even make them anymore, anyway. The idea that they were urethane was always a plus IMO.
How many of us can really afford the "real" deal anyway? Or even find one?
Most everybody knows the crap on ebay is fake, but more importantly is of poor quality.
I personally could care less if something is "fake" as long as it's built good. Which is usually never the case and almost a lost wish.

Actually there have been several times people have tried such a thing. There was a meet in Kali with 2 fakers, one has even been in stupidstreet, and honda tunning. It appears his is a Hong Kong fake. The other guy has a WW kit with a Vis front, and a Mugen CRX door sticker or atleast of replica of it.

This should be shown too. The top appears to be real Mugen, and the bottom is WW, or other knockoff with Mugen sticker, look at the emblem too. Mugen tucks in a little tighter too, Mugen attaches with all screws, and removes the OEM side skirt, WW goes over it, and attaches with 2 side tape, the door caps on mugen are attached with studs, and nuts too, through the OEM molding holes. Nearly impossible with side impact beams of USDM doors.

Here are some good pics, of a used kit, in the condition that you will most likely find.

Well maybe they really think their stuff is real?
I mean if they are standard ricers, they are inclined to believe just about anything.
You know, the guys that tell you they have 200 hp because they have a d16z6 with bolt ons, and they REALLY believe it.

Well, what if they showed you a dyno of there car with them in it and it dynoing 200hp with "bolt ons"?
This thread is very informative. Also, the picture with the blue crx, i think the door caps are fake and the bottem skirt is real. door caps look more WW than mugen, to me anyways lol.
Does anyone know how the front bumper bolts on? IE: does it have a bracket it uses like the rear? or does it just use the clips on the top, and sides to hold it up?

You got it. There are mounts behind the bumper lights too, but thats the only difference.

Wow, must be some stirdy brackets to hold up the bumper. fiberglass isn't light unless it is really thin. Then it wouldn't be durable which i don't think thats mugen. Have pictures of the brackets? I'v always wondered how it was held up. I guess now i know.

if youre going to continue to argue that Leon's car is not authentic, then you need to use a picture that is obviously not distorted by the close up camera lens.
it doesnt look like that in person.
and you know very well his kit is not WW.
heres the underside of his bumper.

And that the exhaust cut out is different, and that the mesh is different, and that the mesh is mounted differently, and that the license plate bracket is different, and that the license plate is too close to the bumper. Dude its not an authentic Mugen bumper.
What do you have to go on that its real other than he said it was real and that it has a difuser on the bottom that goes over the tow hook? So one thing pretty much if you dont go on his word. Great argument.

Here is a great example for you Tyson. It has nothing to do with camera lenses. Nothing to do with angles. Nothing to do with being cut out or not. Nothing along those lines. Just look at these images closely.

Look at where the exhaust comes out from. Look at the design of it. Look at the shape of it. Its not even close at all. See what I mean? On the 1.5X one the bumper is straight ontop of the exhaust. On the Mugen Pro Kit II its raised up and beveled. You can clearly see it in these pics. I cant understand why you have any doubt in your mind that the 1.5X bumper is not a fake.
