Default Baller time, Ball Bearing that is. Going from t3/t4 60trim to BB?

Well, my goal is to reach 400whp on a b16, I got eagle rods and pistons, stock sleeves, GSR cams, and the other basics.

I bought a T3/T4 60 trim, but realised that with the money im spending, i shouldnt limit myself to an "inferior" turbo (not that its bad, there is just better).

A very reputable source told me that the closest equivalent in BB world to a t3/t4 60 trim is a GT3076R, but then a few other car savvy guys (my friends) told me that it's too big for the goal (400whp) and I should go with a Gt3061R? The smaller BB gt30.

And on a side note, the only two people that I know that ran BB turbo's both ran into problems because of its cooling system, one blew seals, that other just leaked, is that normall? Are they less reliable?

Thanks in advance.

i would go with the 3076R personally, but thats up to you.

as far as the cooling and leaking that is obviously install problems that should be taken care of.

the ball bearing turbos are the best you can buy. made to be stronger than normal journal bearing turbos and have abilities to take extreme heat. so obviously less relieable, isnt in the question they are very relieable, but they require special cooling fittings and whatnot so whomever had those problems could have obviously not installed what they needed to leading to cooling starvation blowing the seals

Thanks for the info

I bought a set of the T3/T4 oil lines already, and i got a good deal on them so I definatly dont want to get rid of them.

I hear that the feed will fit just fine, but the return flange will need to be changed.

Any sponsors here just sell the return flange?

What are the "power limit" differences between the 3076R and the 3071R?
Gt seems to be smallet but more expensive?

"GT3071R starting at $1184.99
GT3076R starting at $1079.99"

Thanks.

all the gt30 varients are crap EXCEPT the 76R

gt3076R .63 ar FTW great spool and good to 470whp

get the .83ar hotside for 500-520 max

however the 3076r is the better choice and MANY ppl use it on their setup verses the other 30r combonations

All depends upon the USE of the car, and not just the power output.

Such generalization without purposeful explanation..

It all depends upon the use and need, nothing more. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been produced, as well as over 50 different GT turbochargers.

Use? To get 400whp as soon as possible, while making power in the top end (9.5K rpm), street use, with rare drag strip, always on pump.

You guys arent helping lol

gt3076R with .63 ar wont make it all the way to 9.5k but u wont make power that high unless u have a really agressive cam..

if u want power till 9.5 go with gt3076R .82ar

My last comment wasn't really a joke, just an interesting way of stating that simply changing the volute of that particular housing for the GT3076R is only going to slightly shift the power curve to the right. You are still using the same wheel and rpm speed. There was simply no explanation for why you said what you said.. At least elaborate a bit to prove your point.

Most of the these turbos can go to "9.5K", though it doesn't do any good to spin the crap out of the motor if the power and torque curves drop significantly below that point, before 9.5K can be effectively used. In many GS-Rs and similar setups, power and torque do drop by about 7800rpms, and simply a "cam" doesn't always do the trick.

It is true that the GT3071R will take a bit more boost to just make 400whp, but you also have to look at what he's using it for. if it is simply a street/responsive setup, if the rest of the motor has been properly built, even at 17-18psi, he can do 400whp. If the transmission has a torque multipler, like a different final drive, he may not need a full 400whp to do what he wants to perform. There are plenty of examples of good setups that are 350whp, that are more responsive, better tuned, and prepared that would kill a 400whp setup. I'm simply saying look more at what he's trying to accomplish, and not just spit out a turbo size, and say," just change the turbine housing, it'll put it at exactly XXXX hp."

Will the GT3076R work for over 400whp in a .63A/R? sure, without question. But remember, there are tons in the Garrett and even Borg-Warner lines that can acheive that hp with similar response, less exhaust energy or boost needed, but may have a bit of lag, or more of an upper powerband that he may be looking for. That's all.

Damn TheShodan must have not gotten the honda-tech bandwagon memo of "go big turbos and top-end power or dont go turbo"!

... good info.

lol i would have said all that but im too damn lazy.. i dont need to prove a point because my point is true and i dont care if he or anyone wants a explination. it was alot easier to tell him if he wanted power to 9.5 go with the .82 AR he didnt need to know why it would most people dont even understand when you tell them WHY ---END i win

I see. He didn't need to know why, or want to get educated by others here with experience, but instead, it would be better to just blindly listen to someone who sounds like a 5 year old at recess who just swore he had the most powerful Pokemon cards in the collection.. Sure, I suppose anyone can do that..

Hehe.. kids.

Its like talking to a wall Mac. You make a good arguement, but in the end, its his decision. You helped as much as you could and gave a very good reason, but sometimes, you just can win.

For everyone else here, TheShodan knows what he's talking about. I recently bought a turbo from him after looking around Honda-tech. You can jump the BB Bandwagon based on the "advice" of a few internet racers, or you could listen to reason and figure out why you want a specific turbo. In the end, its better for you to decide for yourself based on reason, rather than just listening to others and hoping for the best.

maybe personal experience convinced him to use the gt3076R. not just some hearsay on the internet.

we took him for a ride in a honda with a gt3076r and needless to say it spoke for itself.
