Default gauge cluster question

ok so i finally got my project car running but my question is, when i turn the key on my speedo and my tach jump to like 3k rpms and 40 mph. even when the car is started they stay there. now the rpms still fluctuate but they stay around 3k. also the gas gauge and the temp gauge aren't working right. now i know the car gets hot cause the fan will turn on and stuff. is my gauge cluster bad? should i just replace it? any help would be appreciated. or also could i just change the green board on the back? thanks

how could it be inserted wrong? there is only one screw. also wouldn't that just affect the speedo. i am just wondering because all of my gauges are acting funny

was the interior harness messed with in your project? also do you know where the cluster came from? my friend got a cluster from a crashed car and his was doing funny stuff like that, my guess is the accident shorted something out on the cluster.

ok so the car wasn't wrecked. it was a theft recovery. and yes the factory harness was messed up. they cut the ecu plugs off and the gauge cluster plugs off. so i bought a harness off the net somewhere and everything seems to work ok except the gauge cluster. and also the only things that work are the lights and the rpms they are just off really bad. no i don't have any clue what the cluster cam from all i know is that it is a gsr cluster with like 39k on it. also even when i drive it the odometer doesn't read. i hope this answers some questions. oh and also i don't think that this would make much difference but i removed the abs and the srs. thanks again.

the abs and srs doesnt harm anything. i would try someone elses cluster first since its easy to change. if that doesnt help then i would check wiring.

so could this be a ground problem? if so where are all of the grounds located on the car so i can check each one. oh also i have the one on the valve cover and the tranny and the battery are there any more?

You need a Helm's manual, then you can go through and check to make sure all the wires are in the right place. It also shows all grounding point locations on the entire car.
