96-00 civic whats up with these crappy gauge clusters
i owned the car for a month now and inmy search of a cluster with a tach i went through way too many ****** clusters already and yet to find a 100% working cluster.
i swapped them and took them apart 100s of times before on obd1 cars and integras and many others. but i just havent seen so many broken clusters that were never taken apart or touched at all.
previous owner replaces cluster because speedo wasnt correct and temp/fuel gauge were broken
when i got the car. temp gauge went out next day.
bought a used cluster with tach and fuel gauge wasnt working
bought a crv cluster everything seems to be working but its not my taste i cant stare at that faded orange crap anymore
bought another used cluster and now the ****** rpm gauge is not working properly..
CRV cluster works 100% so i know its the cluster that is busted again
the rpm gauge reads about 1000 rpm too high. and is randomly jumping to redline when i accelerate.
when i tap on the gauge cluster it jumps up or down..
i dont see any physical damage to the copper connectors or anywhere on the circuit board.
can anyone with good electronic knowledge can help me troubleshoot this ****?
im tired of swapping clusters every fn week. its retarded. i never seen so many problems until i bought the ej6
these things are made cheap as ***... (sorry for the ej fans out there) car is cool but im looking at the quality of materials/parts not the overall design.

Was the used cluster you bought ever tampered with. Did you buy it off a Honda guy, or just from some random junkyard?
I've never had problems with my 4 clusters, only broke the speedometer on one and trashed it. Everything else fine.

all the clusters i got were from bone stock carsat junkyard.
i was the first one to touch them since factory probably. because they had some burned out lights i had to replace.
its just annoying as ****

took it apart and found about 6 of the surface mount resistors have cracked solder im surprised noone has checked for that since the main relays always have problem with that
dont know if it fixed the problem yet will check in a second

so it was indeed crappy soldering
once resoldered it worked great. except by that time i already pulled the needle out and the rod came out with it.. i learned if that happends its toast
once the rod is moved its very hard to get it back to same position. so i need a new tach again...

My el tach kind of sticks at really low rpms. When i first give it gas, itll stick for like .00001 seconds, then itll catch up..but still noticeable lol.
