Help with squeal on clutch engage needed
I've had a very annoying problem the past few months, and tracking it down is a bitch. I've been through almost all common problems, so perhaps someone else has had this problem or I am missing something very obvious.
The noise in question happens when disengaging (releasing) the clutch in a forward gear. Worse on a hill, rolling back. Start to release the pedal, as the car starts rolling, I get a horrible squeal. The noiseis gone once the pedal is fully up. If I keep slipping the clutch, it will eventually go away with speed.
The squeal will NOT happen under any circumstances if I use reverse gear. Can reverse up the steepest hill I can find with no noise.
There are no other clutch symptoms to speak of. Nice fluid engagement, stalls car easily @ idle, etc.
I do not believe it is a brake seizing problem; rolling to a stop without using the brakes will not eliminate the noise on startup.
I've replaced and tensioned the power steering and alternator/AC belts. Both belts are snug, but not excessively so.
The only thing I can think of is the clutch is in need of replacement at this point.
Any ideas?

I'm thinking it's your thowout bearing or pilot bearing. I had the same problem, except mine is backwards (noise stops when clutch isn't depressed) and is less severe.
Maybe other experts can chime in also.

Crap.
I guess there wasn't much left but the clutch. It's been doing it for over 8 months, so I'm not imagining it's too severe. I asked Honda and they told me I had a sized caliper, good thing I'm not paying them $80/hr to track it down.
Hopefully it'll hold out until the spring, then I can do a clutch and flywheel upgrade.
Thanks for the replies. I'll do a writeup on how to do the clutch if one doesn't exist, I guess.

probably the TOB, or maybe something on the clutch disk that's sticking out and rubbing against the flywheel ever so slightly.
if you ever feel like it's impossible to get the car in gear with the clutch disengaged, it's because the bearing's gone kaput. not a huge deal if you have AAA or can drive clutchless
