Default ***********Clutch or Transmission Problem************** (PLEASE HELP!)

Hey

My civic has started making some weird noises. When I start to engage the clutch in gear it makes a rattling/clanking noise and when I am shifting gears sometimes it makes a very loud metal rattling noise. It almost sounds like a bad clutch disc but it still drives fine like nothing has changed. Maybe a bad transmission? I am just lost. It sounds really bad but driving conditions have not changed.

i have the exact same problem. I took my car to my personal mechanic this weekend and had him check it out. basically that problems gets worst as your engine gets warmer. so when its hot, its hard to get out of a slope on first gear. you end up hearing a loud ERRRRRRRR sound in the tranny and your car shakes like its losing traction but its not, its your clutch not engaging. you may even notice that your car runs better in the morning when its cold. basically, its your clutch, that needs to be replaced.

Sounds like your throwout bearing is going bad. Cheap fix, just a PITA to do.

I would agree with you guys but it makes the sounds when you are slightly pushing it into any gear at times and it sounds terrible. Like maybe a shift fork problem. It will rattle really bad when you start to engage the syncros to shift as well.

As stated above, if it is still driving/shifting fine and its making those noses it is more than likely your throw out bearing, ready to drop the trans?

Cool well I ordered the clutch today. Should be here in a few days. It will be like my 5th clutch job in the last 2 years or so. Won't be that big of a deal other then the time spent doing it. I will post back if it fixes it and some pictures of what I find.

Thanks guys!

Throw out bearing was fine. Turned out the springs were dying to get out of the hub and had tore it apart but all the springs were still there. I would have guessed a day or two of driving it would have been enough for it to completely kill itself. Thanks for the help.

The hub or the clutch disk?

The clutch disc's hub. Hence the mentioning of the springs. The springs had shifted so much it had tore the metal in the hub to the point the springs were loose and rattling. It helped fixed problems with stiff shifting and a grabby/chattering clutch engagement. Drives like a dream now.
