First things first. Check your codes!

my car throws nonsense codes out all the time, usually related to intake issues. It runs fine though, so i don't worry about it. Open you fuse box(near battery) and pull out the 7.5 Amp fuse on the top of the fuse box. Let this out for about 15-30 seconds, then plug it back in. When the CEL comes on on OBD2 cars they go into limp-mode which only runs at 80% efficiency. If the CEL comes back on, get it to autozone. They will check the code for free.

Yeh sounds like a MAP sensor issue to me. hard to say without checking the codes though. Why haven't you checked them?

I know this might sound silly but have you checked you oil? If your oil levels aren't right vtec will not work propery.

The reason it sounds like VTEC isn't engaging is b/c his car's in limp mode.

You said it only rev's to 2000k?

If it's in limp mode, VTEC won't engage, it doesn't have anything to do with VTEC directly if it's in limp mode...

You g2 figure out why it's in limp mode..

i was going to say check your oil. you might just need an oil change. you have to build the right oil psi befor vtec will engage.
