Your mechanic is correct that is the best way to do it. I have replace 2 alternators in my civic and that way the only way I could get them out

My experience was on an EF hatch, but I removed the driver motor mount and jacked the motor high enough to get to the alt. Maybe that will work for you.
ive done it with a gsr with a blox intake manifold.... i removed the upper mount of the alt, and moved a wire harness that sits by the shock tower and was able to wiggle it thru..

i did this the same way, but i had to disconnect the brake m/c from the booster.
replacing the alternator suck.

I've done it two ways on EF's Once, LOL, it was a super beater and I just took a hammer and beat the expletive out of the shock tower to make it squeeze through. This was on a $100 car though. On the nicer 4 dr, I unbolted the 'nater, then unbolted the bracket that held it to the motor and was able to get it out without removing the axle.
I replaced two (long story) on my EG hatch from the top...I undid it from the top and lowered it down thru the bottom....the new one went up thru the bottom and installed easy....I have a CX w/o power steering thou (love it)
I had mine on the hx out through the bottom without having to remove the axle. I don't really remember it's been so long but it can only go in and out one way, it's a pita yes but it will work, and also I think I remember unbolting the bracket but I'm not completely sure.
I just did one today on a EF at work and i pulled it out the bottom without removing the axle. All i did was remove the bracket that holds the alternator and then pulled back the splash guard on the driver side by the tire and slid it that way and out it came with very little effort. hope this will help.
