Default knock, knock, who's there? Rod. Rod who?....

Rod bearing or some other internal part. My "lump" bit the dust last weekend at the PBOC track event at Barbers. I had already planned on it being my last event of the year. Now it is official. Had a great time saturday running down cars the "should" be faster but I was burning more oil than usual. . Coming out of turn 6/7 I was getting ready to put a pass on someone and the motor fell on its face. hmmm, not good. Limped it around (probably should have stopped and gotten a flat tow) and you can tell the bottom end is hurt. Sooo, here is my question in that I tend to trust this part of the forum more than the other parts.

I am anticipating the worst and looking for a solution. I am thinking a b20 bottom end and putting my B18c head with all of its mods on it. So my hasport b series mounts in my CRX will work right? The sucker pretty much bolts right up correct? What issues will I have. I think I could make more torque with it but do I lose some rpms? I saw recently in GRM the CRX with the B20 block and the B19c5 head. Anyone know how much they go for? Anything to look out for? Help. TIA.

you can buy the whole b20 long block for 450 or so from hmotorsonline.

it will drop right in, but since the b20 never came with VTEC you will have to figure something out for the oil needed by vtec. A few companies sell a kit for it.

Also there might be some dowel pin or something that needs to be machined not completly sure.

Chad would know

You will gain torque and you will definitely lose revs. People who try to rev B20's hard invariably blow them up. Their stock sleeves are pretty weak w/ the 84mm bore and they have a lot of side-loading due to a poor rod to stroke ratio (compared to a GSR or ITR). If it were me, I wouldn't rev one over 7k and expect the bottom end to last. You could possibly increase that by adding a block guard, but they're really not made to rev.

Assuming you didn't throw a rod through the block or something, I'd just pull the shortblock apart, have it machined as needed, put it back together and call it good. It may be no worse than just having the crank polished and replacing the rod bearings, but you won't know until you get it open.

Barry, I'd pull the head first and assess the damage. It may be cheaper to rebuild what you have. I'm not a fan of B20 bottom ends, unless it's a re-sleeved B18 bored out. The B18c bottom end is better/more reliable IMO.

Is there a budget?

After researching it a little more I am inclined to keep what I have but do want to talk to Helms who is racing a b20 vtec against Chad. I will have to open it up and see what chit is busted first.

That's the setup in the Esprit EK9. It gets revved to 9k constantly. lol, I don't think they care how long it was going to last though.

The B20 rod bolts sure wouldn't last at 9K rpm, so there have to be some kind of bottom-end modifications. And Barry, Helms' B20VTECs get blown up fairly regularly. If you want something reliable, that's not really it. They are running very high compression (non-B20 pistons) and higher revs though, both of which decrease reliability.

b20 are good for street and drag, but roadrace is pushing it. If it runs a little bit hot the sleeves will go out of round or crack. If you can keep water temp down they usually last a long time.

imho, you should go with a sleeved b18 block... bumping displacement up to 2L and not sacrificing revs with a larger crank.....

good deals on bottom ends can be had if you scour the classifieds... people often change their minds and go from NA to turbo - thus selling their built bottom end... therein will lie your deal.

I didn't think there were any other pistons that fit the b20 OEM wise, could be wrong though
