So my H22 is knocking and I think its a rod knock. I stopped driving it when it started.
If its a rod knock can I replace the rod bearing by dropping the oil pan and replacing them and if so what are the chances of my crank being ok and it fixing the knock?

 

Any rod knock at all will cause damage to the crank and/or rod. Do it the right way the first time and pull the engine.

Verify that it is indeed a rod knock before you go tearing it down though, so you don't waste any time.

 

How do i Verify that with out pulling the rod caps off? What else could knock? If I am going to do that I mine as well slap some new bearings in and hope it fixes it.

 

So lets say I do this right and I replace my crank, what are the chances of the cylinder walls being damadged from the bearing?
I mean I down shifter hard as hell about 8 miles away from my house to pin it and make a light and I think that could have done it. Like 3 miles later I noticed a slight knocking and I drove it home and I ran it a little at home to show somone who said its a rod knock. It sounds like one to me. then I quit running it.

 

Rods and crank are probably scarred. You might be able to do oversize bearings, but you have to take it to a machine shop and see what they say. The walls you need to check, it should be on the manual on how to do that. If the cylinder walls are scarred then you might have to "bore" or hone it according to what the machine shop says. Easiest way to verify without pulling the caps off is with an oil change. Change your oil and add 20w50 instead of whatever you normally use. If the noise goes away or quiets down significantly, then it's almost certainly a rod knock. If the noise remains at the same decibel level, then it's something else.

Cylinder walls aren't related to rod bearings.... at all.


Downshifting doesn't affect anything, the only thing that'll damage your bearings is lack of lubrication. If you were low on oil when you downshifted, that could've been the problem, but regardless, oiling is the cause of bearing damage.

 

U sure it's rod knock and not valve tap ?

 

I would just pull the pan and pull the bearing out and inspect the crank journal for any scratch or grooves by using your fingernail to see if it gets caught. Then go from there to see if the engine needs to be torn apart for a crank replacement.

Otherwise, you can just replace the bearing with the engine still in the bay and make sure to plastigauge the bearing.

 

It sonds more like a knock then a tap. when i ouwn shifter hard I reved it to 8k+ really fast. the max It could have gotten up to was 8300. I was use to my f22 gearing.
