diy request: converting turbo from internal wg to external wg
alright guys i have a t3 .42/.48 from a saab and was thinking of converting it to run an external wastegate. Now can someone send me a diy thx
All you have to do is take off the internal wastegate, and weld shut the flang on the exhaust housing of the turbo. thats it
Also, I noticed that you can also tighten the internal wastegate to be shut really hard, and dont hook it up to the intake manifold, and just run an external wastegate. This Logically should work, but im pretty sure this method has problems because iv never seen or heard of anyone doing it.

Also, keep in mind that if you weld the flapper shut in your existing turbine housing it'll be like that forever. If you want to sell the turbo later when you upgrade that makes it a little harder. I suggest picking up a spare hotside and welding the flapper shut on it, that way you can switch back to internal gate before you sell it. You can also just weld the little flapper bracket that the actuator arm attaches too and that makes less of a permanent modification on your turbo. I know that .42/.48's are cheap, but if you're like me you need everything you can get when you resell your parts to fund an upgrade.
There's no SIMPLE DIY for this, not like ek skirts on an eg, or jdm yellow fogs...
The best route is to get rid of the flapper assembly completely, get a 5-bolt flange for the turbo (w/o the WG hole), redo that section of your DP, and use a manifold with a WG flange. Otherwise, get the 5-bolt flange w/WG hole, weld a tube/flange to that hole for the external WG, and hope you have enough room. The second option has just as much chance of having boost creep as the internal WG alone.
BTW that turbo is good for 250whp MAX, rarely do people have issues with boost spikes with that much whp. Not only that, but most sohc/dohc motors in good shape will survive more that a few seconds at 250whp.

Hi I'm ketchup man, I don't feel like researching so someone spend the time and tell me how to do it all for me.
