noob on Motor Swap advice
What would the general cost be for a new motor/manual tranny on my 97 automatic EJ8? I'd like to put in a 97 USDM GSR motor/tranny. I don't know a lot about motors (longblock, shortblock, etc.) so I want to keep it simple...and legal. I want to be able to pass inspections and remain smog legal. The only additions I would make to the motor are header/exhaust to help with fuel efficiency. Please don't blast me for being a noob. I'm just looking for advice. Where would be a good place for me to buy my parts and get the swap in for me?
It'll probably cost you around $3500-$4000 ish for a REALLY nice low milage legit (not stolen) engine swap... But you can get older, more used blocks for less, and re-build them and still come out on top financially... No doubt this can be done if you find a good deal on a decent donor engine... BTW Longblock means engine block, and head, shortblock means block but no head ...
As far as CA emissions laws go, I'm not even gonna go there...

Thanks. I know that in CA, I can only have engines installed from another vehicle from 1997 (same year as my car) or newer. There are probably a million other rules I don't know about. I'm hoping someone from my are can help me out. Any San Diegans in the house?
sorry to correct you NATE047:
long block: bottom end plus head
short block: only bottom end and no head
do research up on it...if i were you, i'd spend time researching on how to convert form an auto to a manual...more fun that way...plus, an automatic swap just isn't as fun...
save money and do that swap first then get to know the differences in them honda motors...and see what you like first before moving forward...just a thought from me to you...

Thanks for the suggestions ek4_b16a. I have done a bit of research on the differences of the engines that can fit on my car. I think I will try to follow your advice on first doing the auto to manual swap. I do not plan on doing an automatic motor swap at all. But wouldn't I save money doing both the tranny and engine swap at the same time?
If I do the auto to manual swap first, I will need a tranny for my D16Y8 that I currently have on the vehicle now. Wouldn't I need a new tranny to fit the B18 series engine that I plan to replace it with?
