Default D-series swap

I own a 94 civic with a D15B7. I found a Y8 motor for $300 obo locally. It is a complete longblock. No tranny. Will this be a direct swap into my civic? Will I have to replace any wires or parts in order for it to work properly? Car = OBD1, motor = OBD2 (right?) Can I use the tranny from the B7 for the Y8? Are there any issues I may run into and will there be any parts I will need to buy inorder for everything to work (motor, vtec, etc..)?

I also found a complete D16Z6 minus wire harness and ecu for 500 obo. Will I be in the same situation as the Y8? Is this too expensive? Motor has 100-120k miles on it. I can test drive it before it is taken out of the car.

honestly.. a single swap isn't worth it. i mean if you plan on swapping.. u might as well go dohc.. unless you plan on building ur sohc. but the y8 and d16 is the same.

Yea, I don't really see the purpose unless your current D15 needs to be replaced, but that would really only be useful if rebuilding cost too much. I don't believe it's worth it bud

I'm getting so tired of people saying this. "Don't do a mini-me it's not worth it, go for a complete swap....don't do a d series swap it's not worth it, you might as well go DOHC....Don't do a b-series swap, they have no torque..." Where does it end?

That said...I'd do the D16Y8 and turbo it.

same here i like B series like the next guy but the prices are ridiculous.
so i went ahead 2 years ago and swapped in a d15b vtec 400 and i get to keep same axles same tranny etc....cant beat it

it really depends on your goals which mines are not high at all

hold up i thought he said he has a d15b7? a y8 will be a pretty good upgrade but not a big jumpbuy far as the swap goes you get to keep every thing but you will need a p28 ecu and run vtec wires

By "complete Z6 swap" do you mean he has the tranny too?

If it has the tranny I'd take the Z6.

As far as wiring harnesses go you can swap over the wiring harness from your D15 and run the extra wire for VTEC.

You could pick up a P28 and it would run everything perfectly.

Unless you're looking for uber-gobs of power the D series is a perfect platform. I made around 240whp on my boosted Z6 setup with over 240k on the motor.

It's now being replaced with a built Z6 that'll take even more abuse.

My B7 is slowly burning/leaking oil. The Y8 has no tranny just the longblock. the Z6 is complete with everything except the wire harness and ecu.

My original plan is save up money to buy a b-series car, but at the rate I am saving and bringing income in, I don't think my car will last that long. So, if I get a better running motor, I can save for a longer period of time until I do buy my next car.

I'd reccomend getting the Z6 & a P28 ECU.

All you have to do is swap over the wiring harness, run a wire for VTEC/VTEC oil pressure, and you're good to go.

How did your tranny and clutch hold up to the power? Were you running the stock internals?

Buy the D16Z6 if they'll offer up a warranty.

Don't listen to the "SOHC is a waste" bullshiit.

There's nothing better than spending $500.00-$650.00 (misc. parts, fluids, etc.) and going from 102hp to 125hp and going from a taller-geared transmission to a closer geared Si/EX transmission.

I love a DOHC as much as any JDM fanboy, but I also love and appreciate the D series too - I've got a B18C5 in a 92 hatch, but I find myself driving my 11:1CR D16A6-powered 91 hatch more often.

...then again the SOHC car has full interior, A/C, stereo, windshield wipers, etc. etc.

Go with the Z6 and you'll be plenty happy until you get the hunger for more power, at which time you can go boost or sell the Z6 swap for what you paid for it and cough up the $2,500-$5,500.00 for whatever DOHC swap you want.

BTW:

The clutch for a DX and D16Z6 are the same - I'd suggest buying a new clutch anyways. Try out a Exedy/Daikin stock replacement clutch or at most a "stage 1" and you'll be plenty happy. I've got an Exedy/Daikin stock replacement clutch in my SOHC car and it holds the power just fine.

Go for the Z6 if it comes with more assurance that it's not a crap engine. You will like the difference.

It held up good for awhile. I burnt it up trying to do a burnout in the wetbox with slicks.

240k on the motor, 240k on the clutch.

The motor held up good for awhile. I was running 7lbs of boost making mid to upper 100s, then I turned it to 15 and ran it like that for almost 6 months with no tuning other than a basemap. It held up pretty good until the rings went. I think the block is cracked too, but I have yet to pull off the old head. I'll find out this weekend.

If I had tuned it properly it would still be running.

I would definately go with the d16z6 i have three of them and i like them also the p28 is an awesome ecu. the z6 is great for boost if built right and they run a long time. and there will be a little bit of performance gain too.

I've decided to go with the Z6, but now its all about if the motor has been abused and if it is legit.
