swapping obd1 d15b into a obd2 civic w/ y8... any heads up?
A friend of mine spun a bearing in his 96 EX w/ a y8 in it. He bought an obd1 d15b and wants to put it in. If it was up to me he should have just bought another y8... however, this is what I have to work with.
I plan on just switching the intake manifold, dizzy, and wiring harness off the y8 and putting it on the d15b... is there anything else that may cause a problem when putting an obd1 motor into an obd2 car?
I have a complete y8 swap to pull parts off of.

I don't really know exactly what else you would need to switch between the two motors, but honestly...
Why would you do that swap? OBD II to OBD I? Especially a D15B?
I could understand if maybe it was a more powerful motor.
Is your buddy pressed for time to get the car running again?
If not, just sell the motor, and then start over with at least a b18C or something.
My two cents. Seems like if you are gonna do the work, at least give the car a chance to have a powerful motor, and a chance to be legal. OBD II to OBD I won't cut it.

Re: (d-swap)
well you can switch the dizzy and the crank angle sensor and run the motor obd2 with the y8 ecu but it won't run right... Or you can switch it to obd1 and run a p08 but then you have to add a 5th wire for the o2 sensor cause the p08 uses a wideband... Best bet would probably be to run it obd1 with a dx ecu or something....

Re: (dunkd)
it will def run right if u run the jumper harness and a p28. but it will never pass emissions. you cant just swap the crank angle sensor, they use a different gear on the crank for obd1 and obd2. to do it right, just get an BLOCK from a 96-00 civic and swap it in. they are all 1.6 and are all basically the same. good luck cody

Re: (I Have an STD)
ob2 ecu will run the engine but will have a crank flucuation sensor code and won't pass inspec. some y8 mani's have a vacum port for a thermo sensor and i don't think it will seal correctly against the head. i'm 99% on that

Yes, but you can swap the crank gear... I think that is a little easier than swapping blocks...

Re: (Sam1am26)
the gear is only 1 prob. the sensor won't bolt to the d15 oil pump. the y8 has a diff. style pump to allow for the sensor. unless you glue it on

Bingo.
I was hoping to find someone mentioning the problem with the oil pump housing that also houses the crank flux sensor.
Biggest question:
Does your friend live in an area with emissions testing?

Re: (86si)
Yes I amware about the differences in the oil pump... On the F/H series we would just switch the oil pump and gear... I'm assuming the d15 and d16 oil pumps are interchangeable but i guess it doesnt matter anyways if your friend is going with a d16 now...
